Up until recently, my optical drive has been working sans probleme. Just recently though, it's begun to act up. Sometimes, whether I chose to eject by right clicking a CD/DVD or by simply pusing the eject buttom, the drive makes an effort to eject but never actually does. Sometimes the CD/DVD will remount and sometimes it won't. If I just keep trying to eject it, it'll eventually come out. I thought at first that there was a slight dent in the casing, but after careful examination I can see nor feel a dent. I can't seem to find or justify any other explanation. The problem doesn't happen all the time, and as of late, seems to be going away. The lack of a pattern is baffling me, I can't think of any possible reasons. Any ideas out there?

The 17" machines haven't even been out for a year, so it must be under warranty. If the behavior is erratic it may not be just the discs you're trying, it may be the drive.
Take it to an Apple Store or call apple up. If you don't have AppleCare be firm that there is a hardware problem otherwise if you've had it for more than 90 days they may charge you for the call.

Take note if a particular CD or DVD is jamming and inspect the edge carefully. My 17" absolutely does not eject the Fujifilm brand CD-R disks but will eject any other brand without fail. I figured out how to eject the Fujifilm CD's however and never sent my 17" in for repair; STRANGE THINGS can happen to a laptop sent in to Apple for repair. Fair warning. If your problem goes away on its own I would not send the laptop in. If it is a particular brand of CD or DVD I would NOT send the 17" in.

Just take it to an apple store nearby, and they'll replace the drive in a day. That's what i did when a cd got stuck in my drive, cause it was the best option.
