I'm trying to help my father fix an ailing iBook (late 2003). Here's the skinny:

The machine seems to want to run ENTIRELY off the battery and not off the power supply, and so it'll shut down as soon as the battery runs out of juice.

Here's what's weird: The battery indicator in the menu bar says it's charging. The light on the power adapter is green. Zapping the PRAM didn't help. Resetting the PMU didn't help. Hardware test came back good.

The machine will NOT boot without the battery and when plugged in. We've tried other power adapters from other iBooks, and they don't help.

Here's what's even weirder: The machine seems to charge the battery. It just won't power itself off of the power adapter.

Any ideas/help?

To make matters worse, we think the thing is ONE WEEK out of warranty.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers
Scott

Don't mention that its one week out of warranty to Apple and take it to their store or called them up. Try to argue that it is not out of warranty if they inform you so or perhaps that the problem had been present for a while.

I just had my iBook repaired right around the time the warranty expired (they did most of the work after the warranty expired and I basically received a 90 day warranty extension!).

Just to eliminate one possibility that you didn't mention: Could it be that outlet you're plugged into? Perhaps it's just not drawing enough power to run the iBook?

Outlet is fine. It's been tried in several different locations, all to the same effect.
