My mother recently bought an iBook.

Most of the time it works fine - however about once a month (for a day or two) it will not boot - it just goes to blue screen - almost as if it cannot find any boot volumes - although it doesn't show the Question Mark and It won't boot from CD.

She sent it back to Apple twice, but unsurprisingly, both times they sent it back as "Unable to reproduce"

What can I do about this?

My first thought was to video the fault - but unless they can reproduce it, I don't see them replacing or fixing the ibook.

Unfortunately you are right. If the problem cannot be reproduced by an Apple employee (such as a Mac Genius at the Apple Store) I don't think they will do anything to fix it. I've had several problems with my iBook and only the reproduceable ones have been corrected. Currently I'm having these difficulties:

#1 Screen will not turn on after sleep (or the backlight doesn't). Nothing I do corrects this except a restart.

# 2Modem hangs after someone attempts to pick up phone line. Refuses to disconnect. Unable to kill process (even when in root) and having to restart.

Both of these happen frequently (2-3 per week). Apple had my iBook for three weeks in August to correct auto-shut down problem. If I can figure out how to reproduce the screen problem I'll argue to exchange this for a refurbished 800 or 900. I have three months of repair warranty to figure it out!

Their efforts to "reproduce" the problem probably consist of switching it on once; if it works, tough for you. If it doesn't, try again; and tough for you.

Sounds like a system issue to me. Reinstall.
