i have a powerbok 165c and it has gone caput (sp?) again and wondering if anyone has experience using the hd-30 cable to connect powerbook to powermac and if that is a viable way to fix any problems (ie chimes of doom)? it will almost start from a floppy, but then freezes. . .any ideas? or is it just time to lay it to rest?

You can use the cable to connect to external scci drive and install new OS and run disk repair program.
If you have a switch on your cable, you can use the PB drive in scsi mode to fix PB drive
Steve
Not really worth investing a lot of money opn a new drive.... unless you get one cheap offf Ebay

hey zany,
with the PB 165 you are really missing out on modern computing.
yeah, i loved my PB 180, but believe me on this, once you upgrade to a more modern machine you will be pissed at yourself for waiting so long.
this link gives you many nice choices for an upgrade:

true. . .though the 165 is not my main computer (powermac g3 233 beige) it would be nice to have something to be able to take to work and school with me as well as when traveling to visit people so i can do work still. but due to prices and finances, i can't afford one at the moment, no matter how i look at it. . . .though i did find a demo'ed ibook blueberry (i think, could be indigo though. . .) 233/ 64MB/10GB at a nearby compusa. but they want $700+3 yr applecare for a total of $1000. smile
thanks for the thoughts!

Hey Zany,
Small dog electronics and the Apple on line store both have the 700 mhz iBook (new leftovers) for $799 including 1 yr warranty.
For someone on a more modest budget, i would recommend the Pismo (Powerbook 2000 Firewire). try shopping on eBay after the back to school rush and you can probably find a 400 mhz model for about $500.
Another well-liked alternative is the Wallstreet for about $350 to $400 or a bit higher on eBay.
If you are on a severe budget, look for a PB 1400C (active matrix screen) with a G3 upgrade card. You can probably find the CPU for about $100 and a Newer tech G3 250 upgrade card for about $125.
You can find a bare bones 1400 CS (passive matrix screen) well under $100, and that would still beat the pants off a PB165C.
Read the link I posted before re low end PB's for more details.
Best wishes,
Rich (Pismo G3 500; PB1400c g3 250)

$1000 for a non-new clamshell iBook?!? Not worth it. It's well worth the money to spend a couple of hundred bucks more and get a brand-new, current-model iBook.

this is true, which is why i was surprised it was still that much after being on demo for so long. . .and not really clean either (but that tends to be the nature of the beast i would think). the one sales associate said he thought that was too much but he couldn't change it, went back the next day and talked to the manager and he said that was it and couldn't bring the price down and applecare was a req'd purchase. for some reason i have a sneaky feeling that he will have that ibook for a long while yet if he is selling it at the price of a new ibook.
