How 'bout no? There are numerous threads on this..no one thinks a PBG5 is coming, between heat, size, etc. it's going to be a while before we see them. No, my opinion isn't based on any inside info...just personal opinion, but the cons of putting a G5 in a laptop outweigh the pro's by a longshot.

Well, if moto keeps causing problems for Apple like that have with the G4s.. we could see them a lot sooner then expected. But by soon, I mean like really really down the road.

One thing about Apple is:
Whenever "everyone" is convinced something will or will not happen, usually the opposite occurs. (like the stock market .. ..)
I believe the G5 PB's will be announced by Macworld SF 2004 in January. Now, whether they will be available on day 1 or whether I have to wait until April like I did for my 17" is another question.
I also believe they will probably get one more speed bump rev out of the Powerbooks between now and then.
1.25 Ghz seems reasonable for the top end with some better video card support.
DVI for the 12"
And Al formfactor for the 15"
Those are my predictions and they are worth whatever you are willing to pay.

No, the G5 isn't coming to a laptop, at least in the near future. The new 15" Al's will still be G4's.

People just started getting their G5 machines...plus Apple said 'not any time soon' for G5 laptops...February is not likely at all, maybe a year from now the earliest

In my opinion, I don't think Apple will release the G5 PB within the next 6 months. Few Issues:
Heat and production/manufacturing cost will be sky high (considering they can hardly get the 12" to cool); battery will be poor; Apple would not release a brand new machine 3-4 months after the release the PB G4 (that is, if it's released in 2 weeks @ Paris), it would not be cost effective.
Personally, I think the G4s still have a respectable life in them.

We all know that the G5s are too hot and all this hehe. Just think when the new powerbooks come out everyone will stop repeating themselves. Although apple has been known to suprise us, and what do we know what IBM is doing, For all we know they could be shooting out processors for the PBs. its not like we have access to their Intranet.

Yes, I see a G5 powerbook coming, just not in the very near future. I think within a year they should have it in a notebook. It is a natural progression, they cant stay with the G4, nor can they stay with Moto, unless IBM has the same production issues that is.

According to Steve Jobs this is the year of the laptop.
That statement was back in January and absolutely nothing has happened on the 15" Powerbook, which is Apple's flagship laptop.
In June or whenever the G5's were announced, it was said that there were no plans for a G5 laptop. This I gather was due to the G5 chip being so hot.
EVERYONE assumed the 15" flagship would be upgraded to at least meet the 12" and 17" aluminum case along with Airport Extreme, Firewire 800 etc. Well here it is September and nothing, we have the same flagship powerbook from like a year ago?
My GUESS.. at the Paris show coming up Steve will announce a G5 15" Powerbook which will knock everyone's socks off.
It will be a G5 clocked down considerably to address the heat issue, probably will run at , perhaps only 1 ghz, but will be 64 bit, and Panther ready and have the higher system bus speeds similar to the G5 tower.
Again..this is a guess on my part, but I think something radical will be announced. At this point if they just aluminize the 15" and give a speed increase it will be a ho-hum announcement and get almost no press and little excitement.
The only other option to generate LOTS of sales would be to somehow install DUAL G4 processors, but I don't think that would be possible due to cooling concerns, but maybe a dual 1 gig G4 would be manageable? I just don't know.
Again..this is all speculation on my part. Again, I do expect something pretty earth shattering just because there has been NO upgrades at all for so long. Apple could have easily upgraded the 15" with aluminum and firewire 800/usb2 a LONG time agao, if they just do that now, I think the silence will be deafening when it is announced.
Expect something BIG. This is the year of the laptop. I assume Apple will really mean that.

How long ago did the 1GHz G4 make its debut in the PowerBook? More than a year ago, IIRC. Apple hasn't even been able to squeeze a 0.25GHz speed bump out of Moto since then. No way I'd drop several grand on this pathetic G4 line. It's G5 (in a PowerBook) or Apple gets nothing from me.

There is no conclusive evidence that a 1.2GHz G5 dissipating around 20W couldn't be put in a laptop. The PowerMac G5 case doesn't prove it, anymore than the large heatsinks and turbine-like fans in the G4 PowerMacs prove that the G4 couldn't be used in a laptop.
That said, it's certainly possible that they're waiting for the 90nm 970 before shoving it into a PowerBook, so they could release a really *good* machine (1.4-1.6 GHz, maybe, with better battery life). In that case I'd expect (hope?) to see them 1H04 sometime. Hard to nail down exactly, because we just don't know when the 90nm 970s are really coming.
I would assume that the PowerBook team has been working on the motherboard and case designs for quite a while, and are in a pretty advanced state right now, though possibly still waiting for new chips before getting the final go-ahead.

A PowerBook will definitely be my next computer, but I will have to hold off until they come with G5s.

A 1.2 GHz PPC970 is expected to draw only 19W.
And taking something from CrispinWilliams: "MPC7410 (400 MHz 1.8 V), MPC7455 (800MHZ 1.85V) and the MPC7457 (1GHz 1.1V)... these draw 4.3 W, 22.8 W and 7.67 W"
Here is the article...
