I installled backup 2.0 beta yesterday and then tried a backup to dvd it required two disks.
I started the backup and after the second disk it said to insert a third disk.
I hit the cancel key and everything semeed fine. I then tried to acces my idisk and it came up with unable to connect error =-43
I figured maybe .Mac services were down.

I then tried to restore the backup I had just made and backup would not start.
so I followed the instructions to uninstall and reinstalled backup 1.2.3 trouble is once the installer app starts and I enter the passphrase for admin the installer crashes and says no other applications have been affected.
I tried a few other .pkg apps and they all do the same thing.
I then tried to do a software restore from my restore dvd, the computer will not boot from the dvd drive.
I spent a hour with applecare on the phone an they came to the conclusion the disk is bad .
I tried a friends 17" (no superdrive fm upgrade) restore disk this morning same thing and he COULD boot from my disk I have a bad feeling this is related to the firmware upgrade

Kids, this is why we don't install unsupported firmware updates.

I haven't heard of such problems yet, but I don't think I've heard of anyone trying what you've done yet. Are you sure your media is good?

You could always try downgrading to D0CB to see what happens. D0CB is not an ideal firmware for the 17" (because it doesn't support DVD-W write or 2X DVD-R write) but at least it still doesn't work then it's probably not the firmware, since D0CB is a supported firmware by Apple.

BTW, to all the 17" owners out there. I still do NOT recommend cynikal's firmware to you, since the only benefit really is 2X DVD-R, and there is no downgrader to DWDB. It's more benefit to us 15" or 12" owners, since our usual firmwares do no support DVD-RW write (or 16X CD-R write).

Well well, there were enough warnings on
http://superdrive.cynikal.net/

Especially with a 17" (no downgrade path), you knew you were taking a risk.

I am glad I didn't rush for it.

There are just too many variables to correctly place the blame on the firmware update.

I haven't noticed any adverse effects writing DVD's or CD's.

Have you booted from a DVD yet?

Haven't tried the DVD, but booting from a CD works for me. (15" with cynikal firmware.)

I'll try a DVD later.

That won't be a good test. A good test would be for somebody who actually installed the update on a 17" PBG4 to test booting from a DVD.

I tried booting from my PB's 12" original software DVD and it works fine. Also, booting a DiscWarrior CD works fine too.

Yes, this problem sounds more like a corruption of a package install and not a hardware problem.

You could have tried deleting the package receipt for Backup in /Library/Receipts/Backup... And then tried reinstalling. That should have worked.

But anyways, glad to hear you are up and running again.
