I couldnt find any reference on this forum to the problem I'm having, so I'm hoping its not unique.

When the AC adapter is plugged and I close the lid of the computer, it goes into sleep for about 3 seconds (the pulsing light comes on) then comes out of sleep. The screen doesnt come on, but the pulsing light goes on, and when I open the lid, the screen comes on too quickly. It seems like its just on the "screen off" power-saving mode. This would make sense if it never slept: I've got the Energy Saver mode set to never sleep while the AC adapter is plugged in. However, as soon as I open the lid, it goes to sleep and stays asleep.

I don't remember this ever happening before I did the screen-spanning hack. But I reset the video ram, and it's still happening. Could this be a side-effect of some kind of clam-shell mode thing?

Anybody else ever seen this?

YES! Exactly this problem, and it just started for no apparent reason within the last month or so. The only difference is that when mine stops sleeping when closed the screen does come on. I've never done the screen spanning hack. Anyone got any ideas?

Embarassingly, I figured out the problem just after posting. Turns out I hadnt put the keyboard back on properly after putting in an airport card, and the screen was depressing the ESC key when I closed the lid.

Hope this helps.

I'll check that. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the answer for me too - we've recently got two rather boisterous kittens who've taken to jumping heavily on the keyboard whenever you're using the ibook, so it wouldn't surprise me if it's got knocked about a bit!

Damn, no cats not to blame for this one. What seems to be happening though is that plugging in the power cable while the ibook is closed and sleeping is waking it up.
