Hey, I'll receive my powerbook 17" in a few days, now I figured that I really don't need a dvd burner in my powerbook. And especially not one that's 1 speed. To me it's nice enough if it can burn a cd in a short time, and play a dvd, so I want to replace the DVDRW unit with a suitable combodrive.
How much of this is possible? I think I can fetch quite a lot of $$ for that internal dvdr-unit.

I doubt you'll fetch up enough to really make it worth it. And you stand the risk of nullifying your warranty.

Yea, if I were you, I would just keep it and use it for the time being... it won't worth your time on trying to sell it.

I know a guy who is really handy with powerbooks, I think he is an ACE, so that wouldn't hurt my warranty.
Another thing, tell me all about flashing. The drive must be 8 speed for cdr's, flashing to 16x must be worth considering.

I haven't bothered doing the flash on mine, because mine is able to burn CDRs at 16x from the factory (in Toast, at least. Thats the only place I burn discs as they must be cross-platform.) I don't really care about the 2x much since I have a 4x dvd burner at home.
Oh, and mine is a 17".

The 17" already burns at 16x you don't have to flash to be able to do that. it's only so that you can burn DVDs at 2x speed. But I won't wait until the 17" firmware is out, because some people really had huge problems after they flash their 17" with the current firmware which was made for the 12" I believe. But still, some people had no problem with it with their 17" at all. It's just the risk you will have to take if you want to really try it out. I won't.

Forgot to add that I am using Toast to burn my cds, and it lets you choose 16x for cdr burnings.
