Well the FedEx guy brought me my Powerbook this morning!!! Yay!!! I'm posting from it right now! This is my first Mac, and so far I REALLY like it...OS X is incredible!!! Still getting used to some things...but all is going smoothly! Anyway...I do have one question. I'm using IE right now...and for somw reason, when I maximize the window...it only fills up 3/4 of the screen, minimize, and maximize back....still the same thing. Am I missing something, or is there a setting of some sort to get it to go full screen? Thanks!

My Powerbook 17" just arrived as well!! Still in the plain brown box. This is my 10th Macintosh, a Newton Message Pad 2100 makes 11.

CONGRATS!
The "problem" you're having is probably the single most complained on feature in OS X by all switchers. With OS X, no longer will a single application fill up the entire screen like everything does in Windows. You can manually strech the box to fill up the whole screen, however "maximize" simply brings it out of the dock into the form you last had it. This will actually grow on you, as you can have other apps (AIM, email, etc.) running in the background and see corners of them around your Internet box so you can access them easily by just clicking on them.
Also, IE for the Mac bites...go to www.apple.com/safari and d/load Safari, it has "Tabs" which allows you to open multiple internet pages without multiple internet boxes filling up your screen. When in Safari, hit "Cmd (the "Open Apple" key) + K" to see what I mean...feel free to ask any other Q's!

As part of the switching process, one must unlearn the way of past evils: Full screen being one of them.
Welcome to the light.

Just to clarify AssassyN's point..."Maxmizing" a window in OS X is a little different than in Windows. While in Windows "Maximize" makes the active window fullscreen, in OS X it simply makes it as big as it needs to. So, in OS X your IE window probably doesn't need to fill the whole screen, since your browser contents only fill 3/4 of your available screen space. Both approaches have their benefits, but I do prefer the OS X since it shows you all the available info for your active foremost windos and yet keeps background windows easily accessible. Welcome to the Mac, by the way!

Sorry, but that's just how IE is. Why don't you start using Safari? it's much faster, smoother and better than IE. Once you give that a try, I'm sure you will soon make it your default browser.
Don't forget to run the updates!
If you have any questions at all, just ask us, and more than likely you'll get a straight answer.
Have fun with your new toy! hehehe

Welcome to Macintosh
Funny, I get excited when others get their Macintosh computers (whether it is their first or their 10th). Must be the Mac way. I don't get excited when people talk about other purchases.
I think it comes from the excitement I felt when getting my first Mac, so many years ago. The feeling just never goes away.

You can maximize (full screen) a window in IE by option clicking the zoom button (green one).
Also, congrats on your first Mac.

Cmd-K toggles "Pop Up Window Blocking" on and off. This is great in that it gets rid of those annoying pop-up windows. Just remember to toggle it on when logging on to some wifi hotspots as they sometimes use pop-up windows to handle logging off.

Thanks for all the welcomes, and tips! I'm downloading Safari right now...so looking forward to that. The maximize thing doesn't bother me "that" much...I can see it's advantages. Just getting my bearings...learning my way around. It's fun...and I'm really really loving OS X! Has a lot of things I wish Windows had! LOL I was able to connect with my XP machine with ease...which really impressed me! The Dock is great...much better than the Start Menu in windows. Which I had had setup kinda the same way using the quick launch bar.
I was always a doubter before when it came to Mac's...now I'm a believer!!!

I don't know if your mac is new or not but if it is safari should already be installed on it. It;s the compass symbol in the dock. BTW, my powerbook that I have now was my first mac and safari is by far one of the best browsers I have ever used. Reminds me how good netscape was a long time ago.
BTW, gotta love the simplicity yet power that is in OSX.

Yeah, mine is new. Just ordered it from Apple last week. Not a refurb model...but brand new. And no...Safari wasn't installed. Someone else metioned they thought it was weird that it wasn't pre-installed. It's OS X 10.2.3 I don't know if that anything to do with it. I'm new to the Mac World...so I'm clueless.

Cool! Yeah, I checked software updates, and 10.2.6 is there...as well as an update for iMovie, iDVD, iTunes, and something else can't remember...I'm going to get them tonight.
Also...is there a program that I can download to run .wmv files? Nothing installed seems to work with them...and I don't think Media Player will work on OS X will it? EDIT: I should look before I ask. LOL Just found Media Player for OS X on Mocrosofts site...also, I forgot Winamp plays .wmv files too. Man, I guess I'm still so excited...that I'm not thinking straight! LOL

Microsoft makes a Mac version of Windows Media Player. It'll play videos up to the Windows Media 8 format. WMP 9 is coming in the fall.
One app I also recommend getting is VLC Media Player. It's mainly geared towards formats like DivX that often show up.

You can get Windows Media Player for OSX, though it's, um, not a very good application. It's on VersionTracker.
More importantly, run and download LaunchBar. You won't be sorry.
Congrats on your purchase!

Wow! Thanks for all the help....you guys have been great! And have made my first "true" experience with a Mac that much more enjoyable, and easy!
Oh...and while I'm here...I have another question! LOL Sorry. I was wondering how to go about changing icons. I created a couple folders on the Desktop, and would like to change their icons...so it's not just the "folder" icon. But I can't find where to do it. I've tried looking in the Help Center for the answer...but can't find anything. I'm sure it's really simple, and I'm just overlooking something! LOL Thanks.

Congratulations on your first Mac and welcome. There is a GUI Customization Forum here at MacNN.
Also get ThemeChanger if you like to customize the look of your computer.
And to change icons, the best way to do that is to use CandyBar.
Keep hanging around here and you'll be a pro in no time
P.S. Many of your questions may already be answered, just use Search and you'll be surprised.

I was forced to use IE yesterday, and was amazed, once again, as to how SLOW IE is. Way, way slower than Safari. I just wish some of the sites that don't work properly with Safari would get their acts together.

I'll agree with that. IE is horrible on a mac. I keep it in the dock just in case I need it but other than that I avoid it. Kudos to apple for creating a good, simple browser to use without alot of garbage on top of it.

Since we're on the topic of tabs in safari, is there a key command for cycling through tabs. I haven't been able to find any info anywhere on how to switch tabs quickly without using the mouse.
