I don't know a lot about this, but it could be that the limiting factor in the speed with which an image can be scanned is the speed of the mechanical arm that sweeps over the image, and not the type of connection from the scanner to your computer. Thus, the difference between a USB 1.1 and 2.0 scanner would be insignificant.

Anyone know?

Different scanners may take longer to scan but I still think the interface (USB 1.1 vs 2) would make a bigger difference than that, especially with high-res scans.

Fireware scanners are faster than USB scanners, with some speed effect being dependent on good software. It's up to you to decide whether the premium price you pay for firewire scanners is worth the speed increase. For casual use, a usb scanner is fine.

Scanners are peripherals, not PowerBooks.
