It runs fine. Max out the RAM. Clamshells can support up to 576mb RAM. The 800x600 screen resolution can get to be a pain, but the clams are generally pretty useable for web surfing, e-mial and light duty stuff.

I've got a 466SE w/FW with 320 megs of ram and it runs fine. It can be a little slow opening some apps sometime if you're used to a newer machine but I can't complain. (Though I probably won't update it with Panther.)

i'm running OSX 10.2 on a 300mhz ibook with a 5400rpm 20gb hd with 128mb of ram and it runs fine! (i'm pretty sure it would be slower if the HD was 4200rpm though)

You know, I put a bigger HD in my clamshell and went with a 5400 RPM drive and I swear it feels faster than it was before.

Because it is faster... the difference between a 4200 rpm drive and a modern 5400 rpm drive is significant.

Still... OSX + Clamshell = torture.

i have to disagree with you cipher, you know i had a 700MHZ ibook with 128mb of ram, and i'd make a bet this clamshell with the faster HD boots and loads pages faster than that 700 ibook did, (and i'm on a 56k modem) i dont know why,,,,

That's what I said... the difference between hard drive speeds is significant. It makes a huge difference.

Oh god... 56k modem... I've been spoiled by using 1 Mbit cable, and then 2 Mbit DSL.. *Shivers*

And if just OSX have enough ram, a 233 Mhz imac is actually quite tolerable (?) in OSX...

Why not Panther? It will probably make things faster

There is a definate smoother feel to the iBook (466) when you drop a 512MB ram chip in it. I went from 320 to 576 and it was totally worth it. Mac OS X just loves ram, I have not found a limit yet. PowerMac, went from 1128MB to 1.5GB and even that seemed to may everything move even smoother.

I have a 466 SE with maxed out RAM running OS X 10.2 purely as a back up machine for my Ti...

Not the fastest thing out there, but for word processing, browsing email and iTunes it is very usable...

Anything more advanced like phototshop or Indesign, and it can be very tiresome, but on the whole it is at least 'viable' as an OS X setup.

Peace,

Marc

I love my iBook 466 SE but I've really fallen in love with the new powerbooks. I think with I'll lay this clamshell to rest with the next upgrade. So my question is...what do I do with this iBook? Any ideas?

Keep it as a backup machine or server...

I have a Ti867 these days, but I use the iBook as a back up machine in case of accident or mishap.

I often connect the 2 machines with a cross over cable and make sure that I am fully backed up file wise.

However, the 466 also serves as a great iTunes machine hooked up to some decent speakers, and also my mother uses it for her email, browsing and word needs.

It still does great work even though it is not the latest and greatest...!

Overall, the Ti has been great, but should anything happen where is needs to be returned to Apple, I know I am not machineless...

Peace,

Marc

I guess I'm from the old school where a major system update like System 7, 8 & 9 were HUGE memory suckers. I could always tell that my machine was slower. I'm not used to installing a new OS and it go FASTER. Plus, I'll probably be upgrading in a few months to a PB and don't really want to invest the money into the iBook.

oh yes os races... does the clamshells support 7.5.2 ? maybe replacing the finder with BasiliskII will throttle it far ahead than a G5 running OS X.0 ?

I've been using my 300 MHz/160 MB RAM/3 GB HD until recently, always having the latest OS X installed. I even ran the Public Beta, a hard way to learn patience

10.2.6 is quite usable, if you want no more than the Terminal, Mail, Safari and Acrobat Reader (5, not 6!).

Make sure you delete all localization files and unnecessary printer drivers to gain some disk space. I even have some of the Developer Tools installed.
