I could get a refurbished 867/combo/256/ for about 1850... In nyc, the sales tax is 8.6 something now...
So i still save 150 bucks.. but I could order it from mac mall and get more RAM... Ram I'm going to buy anyway and get a new machine.
tough choices! 300 bucks off isnt' that much when it comes down to it.
Also with applecare, you dont need to order right away do you? How long do you have to decide whether to buy it?
Do you have one year? or 30 days? I think it's one year.

Hi Matt,
Here's a comprehensive list of refurb laptops available:
http://www.macprices.com/refurblaptops.shtml
But, why not wait til next week after Steve gives his keynote address? You may wind up with more choices.
Be careful if you buy a rehab from one of the resellers, some are in house refurbs and dont come with Apples 1 year warranty. Often thats not listed, so you have to ask.
Also you can consider buying a demo at the Apple brick and mortar stores. I saw the model you are looking at this past weekend for $1499. But you will have to decide whether being a demo has significantly decreased the lifespan. (Still comes with Apple 1 year warranty)
BTW, you can buy Applecare anytime within the duration of the 1 year standard Apple warranty.
Best wishes,
Rich (Pismo G3 500, Al-book 15 owner wannabe)

check out Amazon.com as well.
I believe one of the resellers gives really free shipping as well, but can't think of that off the top of my head.
so shop around..
but I think on laptops the shipping is under 40 bucks anyhow except on like clubmac which really charges outrageous rates on shipping then rebates a small amount of it.
macmall.com
macconnection.com
maczone.com
Click thru to see, but I don't believe Amazon will charge you sales tax either.
But amazon won't give you free RAM..most of the resellers will..and DEFINATELY get more RAM..minimum 512 total.
Why give 300 bucks to the goverment? Its your money, give it to charity, buy an ipod for you, or someone you love.
I believe you have one year from date of purchase to get the extended warranty. I would definately get it though on a laptop.
If you are in New York City and live in Chelsea walk down to TekServe. They are so incredibly awesome. on 23rd street between 6th and 7th avenue.
Whatever you do though wait until the announcements next week to see what is coming. I think some major changes are coming which means if you like what is out there now, the prices will drop substantially to clear out the old stuff.

It depends - how much of an "I've got to have it now" guy/gal are you? If so, the tax isn't that big a deal - as you're technically supposed to pay it to your state if you buy something for consumption in the state anyway. The free offers are tempting - as is the free shipping. But, if you're like me, the ability to drag it out of the shop and take it home that afternoon is worth something.
I was gonna buy my 17" in the Apple store last week. The dork in the store had the nerve to tell my 3 year old son to "not touch the laptops" - **** him. I went down to CompUSA and saved $500 on an open box model. And got to eyeball the screen for pixel defects.
I'm very happy. And will enjoy taking my 17" back to the Apple store at Woodfield Mall in Chicago next weekend to tell that guy what a jerk off he is.

I noticed that too. Apple has a lot of jerks working for them in their stores... to be fair, lots of cool people, but a lot of sales people, pushing ones at that...
I always hate it when the guy who works there yells at you for something everyone else is doing... I mean the laptops in the apple store are abused by adults more than children.
so yes, give him grief
And to the above post, I go to tekserve all the time.. i went today actually to play with the powerbook again...
They seem decent, but it's cheaper to buy from other places....

I've got a almost brand new PowerBook G4 for sale, its a 1 GHz but does have the ComboDrive. Also has 768 MB of RAM. I can ship it out tomorrow if you need it ASAP.
I have over 315 positive feedbacks on eBay (realsue) and over 2100 posts here.
