I have a rather ancient Tangerne iBook (300 mHz. G3, 192 meg of RAM) that gets heavy use (I am a freelance writer).

Lately the shift function has been rather intermittent, and I had assumed that this was due to overuse (I type with two fingers and use the left shift key exclusively).

The simple solution: use the right shift key. But this didn't work. I removed the keyboard to look around and when I reinstalled it, the shift function (both keys) worked (a very Windoze solution, don't you think?). But this lasted only for a short time.

I'm sure that use is a big part of this, but is there another potential cause? I'm thinking dirty contacts, ribbon cable problems, &c.

Anybody have any clue?

Unlatch the keyboard, and have a look at the green cable that connects it to the motherboard inside to see if there's any obvious damage.
You can also pop the key caps off of the shift keys fairly easily, so you can see if there's dirt, if the "scissor" action is working properly, etc.
