So...
I had an original powerbook G4 400 mhz...
I bought extended applecare service.
Over 2.5 years my powerbook had to go in for repairs 7 times, adding up to about 2 months total time without a powerbook.
From times 3-6 I asked if i could have a replacement powerbook...anything BUT the one I kept sending in...
I would have taken a refurb 400...500 etc...
Well...the answer was always "no we don't do that...we only give the same one back".
The 6th time I sent it in, apple supposedly repaired a power problem...but when I got the pbook back it was still broken. Slightly annoyed I called and again asked for a new unit...The answer was "if it's not fixed this time...then next time you can". So i sent it back again
So...another thing broke...I prepared myself for repair number 8 and agaain asked for a new unit...
WOW...to my surprise they said yes...the rep put in an order for the "closest current model" which happened to be a NEW 867 mhz powerbook.
Now...It was supposed to be sent out two weeks ago, but they told me it was delayed...last week same story...
SO...What are the chances I may get a NEW NEW powerbook if they are unveiled tomorrow?
Could I be this lucky??
Just had to share.
Apple really regained my respect after 2.5 years of powerbook breakdowns/dissapointments.

Naz,
I agree...
This was really the breaking point...
In fact I just built a linux box for roughly $350 which smokes the pbook...
I was about to swear off MACs entirely...
7 times is way too often...
We will see how it goes.

Remember --- ask for an upgrade with the replacement
when they replaced my Ti, I paid a couple hundred extra bucks for a SuperDrive

S|ntax,
I am thinking that it is because most of the problems occured in the last year...and they probably would have liked for my applecare to simply expire.
I can understand them not wanting to give me a new one, since I had mine since the very beginning.
The exact words were "well we have to give you the next closest model........which I guess somehow is a powerbook 867mhz. That should be more than sufficient..."
Either way, 867 mhz or possibly a new ALbook.
I'm happy.

Wow, why didn't they just give you an 867 or a 1GHz?
I thought people never get new ones?

Well...It's still up in the air.
I called apple and no one knows why my order hasn't shipped...or exactly when it will ship...
The rep I spoke to is supposedly going to check with the blah blah.....department...blah blah...
I am supposed to call back on thursday.
She said that if any 867s are left, I will get one...if not I will get a new one...
hmm

Wow, I had almost the exact same experience with a Ti550. The motherboard would keep failing every 4-6 months, the screen went bad a couple times and the airport went out. I too sent it back to Apple 7 times before they finally agreed to replace it with the latest model. That was 2 months ago and nobody could ever confirm what the exact replacement model was going to be. Well, two weeks ago Apple called me and said they would be shipping my new book right about now. I have to admit that after about a month I got suspicious that the reason they couldn't tell me the replacment model was that they were planning on shipping model that didn't officially exist yet. The funny thing is that two months ago they said I would get it in two weeks, so I wonder if there was a delay on getting these books out.
The AppleCare rep told me that if the machine doens't fail within 90 days or the repair it's considered fixed. That's why they wouldn't give me a new machine sooner.@The 6th time I sent it in was for a faulty graphic chip but they only replaced the screen, so I finally got to send it back within 90 days.

I had nightmare problems with a G3/400 Pismo. I had the local apple store put in an airport card and things went downhill from there.
Somehow the various shipments in for service resulted in the trackpad breaking and then the part was back-ordered for a MONTH and I went ballistic (after no laptop for 3 weeks) and said "Just send it BACK, I'll use a mouse!" And then the Apple rep said, we could give you a Tibook 400 instead and I said, "Uh, well, uh, OKAY!"
They do usually do right by their customers, although it can take some time...
