The 12 is improved, but not so much that I regret my recent purchase of a 12.

It did get:

DVI (most significant thing)
USB 2.0 (but with FW400, not huge issue)
Extra 128MB in base slot (but can't I now up mine to 1.1GB?)
A few small speed bumps (867->1G, L2, video?)

It did not get:

backlit keyboard
FW800
Gigabit Ethernet
Radeon 9600
80GB 5400rpm drive

Had it, I would have been crying.

Or, if I wasn't so set on the tiny size of the 12", I'd be crying about the 15"... oh, is it SWEEET! It got all that latter stuff I mention, plus:

1.25 GHz
PC Card/CardBus slot (type I and II)
front-loading drive
ports on the right side (where they belong)

Wow! Maybe I want that 15" anyway!

It is sad that one likes one's computer more or less based on the model that replaces it and the features on that model rather than the merits of the machine itself.

Umm, that's why there are so many Mac users that eBay their machines with every revision. People want the latest and greatest, so what.

I don't like my machine any less... I just may like the new machine *even* more... enough to justify the cost and time associated with a switch.

I still love my old Duo and the old Mac OS, in a nostalgia sense, but I wouldn't want to use it any more given the availability of my PowerBook and OS X.

How is that sad?

Pffft! That isn't true for all of us. My Cube is three years old and Apple STILL hasn't released anything that can touch it in the department of utter COOLNESS. i wouldn't give it up for anything in the current lineup!

So what's the difference between miniDVI in new 12" and DVI in 15" and 17" ??
Does this mean I have to find a very tiny DVI connector? Or a very tiny external monitor?

All it means is that the 12" PowerBook is too small for a normal DVI connector, so it got a smaller plug and dongles. The same thing it used to have for VGA or the iBooks have for VGA.

The new 12" comes with two dongles. One goes from Mini-DVI to standard DVI and one goes from Mini-DVI to standard VGA. An additional dongle is required for Composite or S-Video.

It's really very simple. All the panicking here about it is just plain ridiculous.
