Seriously, how can Apple markup memory SO much?

So I am building a new 12", and I go to the apple store - $270 for a 512 DIMM, Amazon (according to dealram) is selling a Viking (NOT GENERIC) 512 DIMM for about $65. Shipped.
I know Apple has always marked up ram, but this seems ridiculous - more than 4x the price? They should be encouraging people to add ram (as OSX loves it), but thats crazy pricing- obviously I will order my own.
Thoughts?

Thoughts? ALWAYS buy 3rd party RAM and be happy.
BTW, how did you order your 12" PB (w/ what options?) and when's your On or Before Ship date?

Well, my first thought is that the PB12 takes SODIMMs, not DIMMs. I suggest you cancel that order.

Because they can and because there are enough suckers out there to buy it from them.

Simple. Apple isn't in the business of selling RAM. It's a commodity whose price fluctuates greatly.
Sure, they are making a great cut on their memory sales, especially considering the bulk buying that they do. But they have to sell memory for the convenience of purchasers who want to get everything in one go.

Thanks for the heads up, yeah, I was looking at 2100, not so-2100. But STILL $106 versus $270 is outrageous. When people do price comparisons, they go to dell.com and price a system, and then a 'comparable' one on apple.com - sure we know to go elsewhere for ram, but the 'money matters most' PC press thinks apple is just a rip off, and for ram, yes they are.

Yeah, but the "quality matters most Mac press" thinks PCs are crap. So I'd say we're about even.
Have you ever noticed the prices auto dealers charge for "options" and compared those to aftermarket prices? Same thing going on here. It's just business.

I agree the Ram is overpriced
but I just got a lovely 17" PB and some extra ram added by the vendor that fried the PB
when applecare told me to remove the extra ram to try to fix the problem
the difference between the Samsung Apple puts in the PB and the piece of crapola that vendor placed next to it was amazing
the thing looked like a bad piece of plastic everything about it looked cheap.
Sure I'm willing to get some cheap ram from Crucial on my own - I know I can trust that.
but you can never fully trust what other vendors will put in your machine
You get what you pay for... right now I'm without the use of my new(old) PB

They might (seriously) cost in the overhead of installing the ram itself. Labour is expensive.

Yeah - for newbie's who want more RAM, they would probably get it installed at a dealer anyway if they didn't buy at the AppleStore. Then they would have to pay the labour of putting it in.
Sure, it's easy - but a lot of peeps don't even like opening their Mac up.
