Amidst this great new update to the powerbook line, there are still plenty of us that own RevA Big Al's, PB17s, or whatever you wish to call them.

I am voicing my complete satisfaction with the my RevA PB17... and woudln't try to sell it regardless. I love it. I can't think what my past 6 months would have been like without it.

For all you RevA Pb17 owners out there... At least we got L3 cache. Anyone else who proud to be a RevA owner, let everyone know here.

Yep, I love mine, and it's behaved flawlessly (since I had my first one replaced, that is!) ever since I bought it.

Still, I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't keen on getting one of the new 15" machines. The 17" I have is great, but something smaller would be even better. If the 12" had level 3 cache I'd go for that instead. Now that I could plug it into my 20" LCD I'd be lugging around the extra few inches unnecessarily (at least to my mind).

I´m more than proud of being an "original" 17 owner. The first day it was sitting on my desk was like coming home from the hospital with a newborn baby in my arms.

Just watching the PB sleep is an exhilarating experience-light on-light off-light on-light off, .....
Perfectly controlled breathing-even after a hard days work.

What's with these threads for justifying past purchases? Tell me you wouldn't rather have $300 off, 80Gb hard drive, more RAM upgradabilty...
As for 15 vs 17? I would much rather "lug" the 17".
I don't need no stinkin' signature!

But we already own the RevA... to sell the RevA for a RevB, would cost us more to unload the RevA at a reasonable price.

There is nothing wrong with the RevA... I bet we'll hear people whining about the lack of L3 Cache....

The new stuff is very enticing yes. I was all set to buy new BUT there's no level 3 cache?!! So if that's true, then the jury's still out for me on whether to buy new. Yes the work I do does definitely benefit from a level 3 cache. The better video card, and more ram? would help but the cache limit is a big stumbling block.

Love my Rev A! The "new" 17 doesn't justify an upgrade from what I have now. Instead I am now looking at a ACD (23" is tempting) for the home office and possible G5 PM. Defintely getting the BT keyboard and possibly the mouse (even though it is one-button).
 Mac Pro 8-Core 2.26GHz Xeon | 12GB RAM | 2.5TB HDD | ATI Radeon HD 4870 | 24" LED Cinema Display
 Mac mini [Unibody] 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo | 8GB RAM | 500GB Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid HDD | 24" LED Cinema Display
 MacBook Air 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo | 4GB RAM | 256GB SDD
Too many accessories to list...

The days of waiting for Apple has made me think that if the G5 does come out in Paris Mac Expo...then I'd be all over it! But the fact is that the upgrades are incremental, thus giving me some time to adjust to my Powerbook 17" Rev A. My mind is now set on other things like getting the best usage out of my PB 17" and Pismo G3 500! Only when they have something spectacular and a "first in Notebook" will I consider buying another Powerbook!
G3 Pismo had the Firewire first! DV Video galore!
G4 PB17" had the incredible screen and Firewire 800 first! Backlit Keyboard!
Hoping for next one to be G5 with some form of newer display (possibly brighter or holographic display for another first in notebooks) Also a Dual Processor for another feat accomplished by an inovating company like Apple. Plus SPDIF Built in in/out like the Desktop G5 would be a plus.
So on with the improvements Apple, and lets see what you guys come up with in another 2 or 3 years! my Teaser and Demo Showreel my homepage with pics and links

Exactly. I will upgrade when:

1. PowerBooks go G5
AND (not or)
2. SPDIF in/out is included.

Now that would justify an upgrade to me. So I'll keep enjoying my 17" PB Rev. A, the world's first ... you know ....

Let's look at the issue this way: real Mac-addicts go for innovation, not incremental upgrades. Rev. A could truthfully claim to be the world's first 17-inch PowerBook (and laptop, for that matter). In addition, it boasted 256 KB of L2 cache and 1 MB of L3 cache.

Rev. B, on the other hand, contains nothing relatively innovative, lacks an L3 cache, and has 512 KB of L2 cache.

Rev. A was a "world-first"; Rev. B isn't. Which model will get put in the history books?

If you were a historian from the future, would you rather own revolutionary models, or incremental ones? Which one required more originality, effort, and design to create from scratch?

Given a choice, I'd go with Rev. A.

Innovators of the world, unite!

I still love everything about my 17inch Powerbook that I have since March. I don't see the big deal with the updated 17inch Powerbook, since there's not much difference. Besides the USB 2.0 and the graphic card, you can get everything else and upgrade it by buying the parts online. So, glad I didn't wait.

How easy is it to install the HD/RAM?

Do you need to take the 'Book to a tech to not void the warranty?

nobitacu--- absolutely... i see no big deal in the tiny incremental update to the 17" PB.. not worth tossing away $400+ to sell the old and buy the new.

dcarmich--- for $3,000 machine, I'd take it to a tech and make sure the warranty doesn't fly away.

RAM is real easy. You just unscrew a plate in the battery compartment (this is described in the owner's manual). The HDD is another issue. You would have to have an Apple certified tech. do it for you if you didn't want to void the warranty.
