Hi, I'm about to get a DVD recorder. I'm interested in a Panasonic one that writes to DVD-R and -RAM. Now, will I be able to read the DVD-RAM disks in my PB 12" Superdrive?

Thanks,

David

Yes, if you buy a 3rd party UJ-815 for your 12". The stock UJ-815 from Apple does not.

Or you could buy an external drive, but iDVD doesn't support burning on external drives.

Sorry - I wasn't clear enough, I'm thinking of getting a DVD recorder deck for my TV - I just want to know if the DVD-RAM disks can be read in my PB?

Thanks

No. These discs are DVD-RAM with DVD-VR and UDF 2.0. The PB doesn't not read DVD-RAM. With the proper hardware, OS X DOES read DVD-RAM, but it doesn't read UDF 2.0, and the DVD Player does not play DVD-VR AFAIK. The only way to get it to work would be to buy a third party DVD-ROM drive that can read DVD-RAM (about $75, with another $50 for a Firewire enclosure), and then get the Heuris DVD-VR and UDF 2.0 software and drivers ($90) for OS X. The software also allows you to rip the video to the hard disc if you want, for editing purposes.

The PB WILL read the DVD-R from the Panasonic set top recorders though. As of X.2.5 or something, Apple added support for these Panasonic UDF 1 discs. The menu sometimes looks a bit funky in OS X, but the discs play fine.

Thanks so much - one final question:

Will I be able to 'rip' the video, and then use it in iDVD?

See above. I edited my message.

Also note that I have never seen the Heuris software. It has been announced, but has not yet been officially released.

Heuris DVD connexIT does import to Premiere and Final Cut, but I dunno if it would work with iDVD. Doesn't look like it.
