In any case, what do you folks think would be a fair asking price for, say, a few months old pristine condition 17" with 1 GB RAM and AppleCare?

Here? Less than $2,499 'cause Apple's selling them for that.

eBay? About $2,800.

I'm seriously thinking about it. If I just got enough for a 15" I'd be happy. Is anyone else going to go for it? Is it likely to sell on Ebay? Mine is 3 weeks old, no scratches or anything. What do you guys think?

Just ordered the 15.2"and I'm looking to sell my Rev A 17"

Here's what you get:

17" 1 gHz w/ SuperDrive, Airport Extreme and all the goodies it comes with

512mb Ram

Apple care with 2.5 years left!

An extra battery (Total of 2)

And, a waterfield designs 17" Racer X carrying case (www.sfbags.com). It's the one with taxi yellow trim. its so good, I'm buying the 15" version. $140 value.

I also have all the original packaging, documentation and CDs

I'm asking $2800 and I will ship for free! This computer was pampered, and hasn't gone three weeks without being cleaned with iKlear.

thanks,

Waiting for the first 17" benchmarks... but might put it up for sale.

Isnt it frustrating when you think you just bought the latest/greatest and a couple of weeks later there's a new kid in town, who claims to be new and improved.

I know, this happens all the time...

But 1.33ghz sounds like 33% quicker than a 1Ghz...

I'm debating selling mine in order to get the new one - I could really use the 80gb hard drive!

Curious what people think I could get for the revA 17" with 1gig of RAM, along with Final Cut Express (obviously with all the install discs, documentation, etc.)

If I still had mine, it'd be on eBay ASAP w/ a Buy It Now of about $2,800 for just the PB, more if you've got extras. I think current 17" PB owners took the biggest hit. The new 17" PBs dropped $300 right off the bat, have a HECK of a better video card, and the fastest proc. in any PB, plus an 80GB hard drive...ouch. I'm very glad I got rid of mine in April (did I say that out loud?) haha, as their value will not be so good compared to the updated ones...however, many that aren't Apple-heads don't even realize this has happened yet, and if you put it on eBay now w/ a Buy It Now price of around $2,700 or so, I'd bet someone will buy it and you can cut your losses, and w/ that cash, almost buy an updated 17" PB w/ the EDU Discount.

I wasn't intending to sell it, but then a long came a video editor who is working on a project for the new women's world cup and she offered $2800 end of last week and so I figured it was worth the $300 hit ( I originally purchased with edu discount) and so I'll be pickin up a new 15.2 AlBook today. I'm excited about the better video card as I like to game a bit.

This isn't exactly a typical situation though...see, the NEW 17" PBs are $300 cheaper right from the start. Thus, even if you take a $300 loss from your Rev. A 17" PB, you've already got more than enough to buy a NEW 17" PB. If you can make the upgrade free, or only about a $100 hit, heck, you've gotta admit it's worth it.

LOL, so the 17" couldnt have been as good as some of you claimed it was only a few months back if you are willing to ditch it for a new 15" just like that!

too lose the L3 cache?? eh.... in 6 months there will a 1.66ghz 17" Al with 100gb, 2 mb of L3, and 4x DVD burn... and maybe even two button trackpad.

where does it end?

I doubt anyone could "upgrade" for free, when you can get the REvA frmo AppleStore refurbed for $2500 +/-, and i'msure resellers will be unloading it for similar. Anyone trying to sell it will take a hit.

Good point musical tone... those bashing the REvA now were praising it like a god in Jan/Feb '03.

It was tremendous back in March '03...but as technology rolls on, things improve, and if you could sell on eBay & make the upgrade next to FREE, why the heck *not* do it? Granted, it wouldn't be worth a $200+ upgrade difference in price to me personally, but if I could sell a Rev. A 17" PB on eBay for about the same price as a new Rev. B, I'm only doing myself a favor by getting a more recent machine w/ more recent features along with a higher resell value.

BTW, I never said ditch the 17" for a new 15", I said for a new 17".

2nd BTW: You guys don't know the perks of eBay obviously...right now, only a margin of Mac users even realize Apple's updated their specs and such, thus clueless buyers on eBay would JUMP at the chance to get a 17" PB for around $2,800 or so if they're in the dark about upgrades...this will only be possible like today & tomorrow, but I grant you it'd work.

If it ain't broke.. don't fix it... It just ain't worth it.

some of us are perfectly happy with our RevA's.... and can't afford to drop a couple hundred bucks to make a small "upgrade."

Of course any current Rev. A 17" PB owner would be grasping for reasons that it's somehow better than the new ones...and although it's a WONDERFUL machine, the new ones have some very worthwhile updates. The L3 cache will be meaningless in real use as the Radeon 9600 & 1.33Ghz G4 kick in.

And nice luck on getting a fried Rev. A! Free upgrade to the new BigAl...can't beat that!

Buy the replacement hard drive you want. Send to me with the Powerbook and $50. I'll transfer your data and install the new drive. Then I'll send back the Powerbook and the old drive.

Exactly! Every new product you buy means instant loss of money regarding resale value. So keep it for a resonable amount of time.

In *most* cases...argh, maybe it's just the "business management major" in me, but it's so obvious in this specific case. You'd CLEARLY lose money selling your $3,299 Rev. A 17" PB to buy a new $3,299 17" PB. HOWEVER, the NEW PB's only cost $2,999...thus, you can still off it for around $2,800+ on eBay and just pay a fractional upgrade price.

An extra .33GHz is just not worth ditching this machine for. The speed would be nice, but not necessary for some one like myself to go running to the hills for. I do enjoy my 17" and everything that I can do with it. I think I'll stick with this machine for at least another year or two, then grab another PowerBook when processor speeds surpass the 1.7GHz mark.

For those who feel the need to rush out and have the latest and greatest, go for it!

It's like a moth to the light, or an addict to the crack.

AssassyN I think its luck for some people for me it was very sad, that PB was Beautiful not a missing or dead pixel anywhere, until it became a lovely 7lbs paper weight

If it was working I would be cheering with other Rev A owners, just was not sure about the big deal with the L3 it seems the update is very good and with a drop in price, nice!

It is awesome to know ebay can get you a new PB for $200 - I love that new box smell

But if I did not have a broken PB right now I would keep my baby we already had a special bond you must understand I was using a G3 500 iMac that was a huge jump for me!

I would not sell if I did not have to.

Bring on the G5s! then I will sell!
