I just ordered my first laptop ever and my first mac today! I got the 17 incher with 1 gig (1 stick) and the 80 gig 5400 rpm hd.
I decided to get the one stick of ram so that I could upgrade to 2 gig by purchasing another 1 gig stick on my own and save a bunch of $.
Where is a good place to purchase this ram and is it easy for me to install myself without messing up the pb?
Also, I read about screen covers in the past. Is the fingerprinting still an issue on the 17" screen? If so, does anyone have a link for them.
I ordered it under the student page and it says 4-6 weeks delivery. I saved a lot of money but have to wait much longer. I can't wait to convert over to mac!
Thanks

CONGRATS on switching to Mac, and you've got one awesome machine coming your way!
TransIntl sells 1GIG sticks for the 17" PB, priced at $649, and can be bought HERE.
I'd actually bet your machine will ship out before 4-6 weeks, that's just a "worst case scenario" date.

Your ship date is probably 4-6 weeks?

It sucks I could have gotten a 1gb dim from apple for 400$ too.
I guess I will have to wait for prices to fall maybe?
Do you really think 2gb of ram on a powerbook is needed?

Honestly, no. I would put over 1GIG of RAM in a PowerBook now simply because the benefit of having 2GIGs isn't worth the high pricetag. When prices fall more, then I'd say it's worth it...however, they're too expensive right now.

I actually just cancelled the order due to someone's nice post saying that the 1 stick of a gig ram was the 4-6 week delay. I changed it to (2) 512 sticks so it ships in 1-3 days! Much better. Problem is, now I have to buy (2) 1 gig sticks individually to get two gigs. I guess I can always buy (1) 1 gig stick and have 1.5 gigs.

Well I'd wait until you get your machine first; most likely you'll be definitely satisfied w/ 1GIG of RAM for now...that'll definitely last you until the 1GIG SODIMMS are a reasonable price.

yeah, I think I am getting a bit greedy at this point. 1 gig should be fine for the work I am doing.
