This deal is from the online Apple store (Which also has FREE shipping right now!!!!):
1GHz PowerPC G4 - 15-inch Aluminum PowerBook G4
• 256MB DDR333 SDRAM - 1 SO-DIMM
• 60GB Ultra ATA drive @ 4200 rpm
• SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW)
• Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
• AirPort Extreme Card
• Rechargeable Battery
• 15.2-inch TFT Display
Subtotal $1,996.00
How so cheap you ask?????
ADC one time discount. If you are a student, join ADC for $99 and then you'll get a coupon that allows you a huge discount on ONE order (it can actually include 1 monitor, 1 laptop, and 1 tower, but there is another thread about the exact specs.)
Anyway, this quote is a real quote, not added up by me, and not a mistake, ALSO notice the extra battery!
The arrangement looks a little odd, becuase I started with the base model, then added the superdrive, backlight keyboard, and Airport Extreme card, perfect for me, becauase while you only save $230 off the higher one, all you would get is .25Ghz and 20GB extra (oh, and a little more RAM, which is cheap anyway.)
To conclude, this deal is ridiculously good, if you are a student in the market for a new mac and don't take advantage of this ADC deal, I question your sanity.
I hope some of you found this helpful, feel free to ask questions if you have em, I'll do my best to answer.

ADC means Apple Developer Connection. There is another thread from the latest days discussing it - look there if you need to know more about the student membership.

if you are a student developer, then ADC is a good idea, but please don't abuse the policy, it only hinders those it could help.

ADC is Apple Developer Center. It's meant for people who develop Apple software and hardware, etc... It's outragously expensive to join UNLESS you are student, then it's a measly $99 a year, which gets you a lot of cool stuff, most importantly (but barely documented) you get a massive discount on an order, just ONE order.
For details check here:

ADC is a group of Apple Developers that get great benefits upon joining, and although joining is expensive for most, you can get these benefits for only $99 if you're enrolled in a college even part time, regardless of class load or class scheduling. One of the greatest benefits is a one-time 20% off discount on the purchase of an Apple computer & Apple accessories. Here's how you can join:
"Just go to http://connect.apple.com and select "Join" to purchase a Student Membership. Put a Student Membership in your cart and "Check-Out". Pay your $99, fill out all the info. it asks (including your Student ID [many universities, including my own, simply use your Social Security # as your ID, so if you're unsure, check into it first] at your college, this is very important), and order it. You'll then be instantly ready to purchase via the Student Discount. You do so by heading HERE and click that banner that says "ADC Hardware Purchase Program" to enter the ADC Store. Wowww look at the pretty prices!
Okay, after you're through gawking, get to ordering! Just put whatever you want in your cart, and make absolute *SURE!* you get everything you need, because once the order is placed, that discount is FOREVER gone, regardless of what you "forgot" to order at the time of purchase. Too, many things in accessories won't be discounted, as it's the Apple-made hardware that's discounted. For instance, a Microsoft mouse will be the same price through the ADC store as the normal one, so don't be shocked, only Apple stuff is discounted, but even the small things like Power Adapters, batteries, etc. are discounted if made by Apple.
Then, place your order, give them your name, shipping info., credit card info., etc. and you're set! Things will begin to ship as they become available. In about a week or two you'll get an email from Apple requesting a FAX from you to them with your College letter of Acceptance (original, no copies) OR your current Class Schedule from your University, PLUS your Student ID card or Driver's License. Also, if you want to type out a page stating your full name, address, and your ADC Membership Confirmation Number (that'll be included in the email they'll send you after you've paid your $99 to confirm that you're in) and fax that page too, it speeds up there confirmation process. Once that's in to Apple, they won't email you telling you it's done, but keep a check on your account at connect.apple.com, and you'll see your Assets (ADC Student Membership and ADC Mailings) become updated w/ a current date, which will be the date they confirmed you after your faxes. This confirmation of faxes allows them to start sending your monthly mailings of free code, free info., free t-shirts, free programs, etc. for a one-year period (very cool stuff!). After that one-year, you can renew for $99 for another year, and you'll continue to get all your monthly goodies, but you will NOT ever receive another 20% discount, even with renewing. That discount is for joiners only, unfortunately, so use it very wisely!"
If you have any other questions, just let me know and I'll be glad to help!

I'm not suggesting that people scam Apple, I'm suggesting that people take advantage of a great oppurtunity that Apple is offering. All legal, no loopholes, just a great program that is underused and not very well promoted.
It doesn't matter if you are not a Cocoa pro or whatever, ADC is a great resource for any student working with macs, even at a fairly basic level.
I guess abusing the system would be signing up, getting the discounted machine, then selling it at a profit. And yeah, don't do that, but I'd hope that is pretty obvious!

Regardless, it's sad to see a 1Ghz G4 laptop one year after it hit the market selling for two grand just because of a few superficial enhancements and features. You'd think we'd have more speed since Sept/Oct 2002.

Hi AssassyN thanks for the great tips! I am a student and I a little computer programing and I am in the market for a new apple laptop so this is great!
My question is this, is the 20% discount off of the normal apple prices or is it a 20% discount off of the already discounted apple eduacation prices. I am looking to get a 12 inch powerbook at the best price possible.
Thanks,
Chris

If you are planning to buy an iPod with your machine, it will probably end up being cheaper to buy the whole package under ed discount given the current $200 rebate.

No prob! It's 20% off standard Apple prices, NOT off EDU prices...and since you're in the market for a 12" PB, if you want to save yourself the hassle of paying $99 and using your once in a lifetime discount right this moment, check out the deal I can get you on a 12" PB HERE.

Thanks for the instructions. I kinda need this powerbook really soon, so it would be killer to have to wait for a confirmation that I am in fact a university student.
Anyways, I was going to do this from the start, but my impatience just about had me order with only an EDU discount.
I am a CPSC student btw, and have/do develop Apple applications, no scamming from me!
edit: dang, the online store seems to be US only

After you fax them (ID and schedule to apple), it takes 48 hours to process.
