OH NO!!!!
I just ordered a new 15-Al PB and ordered it with the 2X 256 RAM sets. I figured that I would throw them away and stick in 2 512MB RAM sets from another vendor (they have been shipped already). Apple is too expensive for RAM. I upgraded my G4 Ti to 1GB this way.
NOW I learn that in the new 15-Al one of the sets is SOLDERED IN. That means I have a 256MB set that is permanent. I can only updgrade the ONE available slot, in this case to 768 MB of RAM by adding a single 512 set.
I wanted to be at 1GB, and now the only way to get there will be to get the really expensive 1GB Ram set.
Bummer!!!!!
I sure wish that I knew this 12 hours ago.

Where did you get this information? I believe that the other side is NOT soldered, but sort of "hidden." You would have to dismantle your Powerbook to get to the other side if that is the case.

Apple docs state maximum RAM of 2GB for this model. Therefore it's not possible that one of the modules is soldiered in.

Please stop spreading this bull.
If you bothered to read Apple's web-site before posted this thread, you'd learn:
256MB or 512MB of PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SDRAM; two SO-DIMM slots support up to 2GB (15-inch models)
You can find it here:

CORRECTION:
So much for random news and rumors. The Apple pdf says there are 2 slots.
Anyone know if they are user-upgrade -- like the G4 Ti???

Think about your question and you will get your answer.
Do you think Apple would release a computer in today's day and age that the user couldn't upgrade the RAM? Of course the user can upgrade the RAM.
If you want to know the specifics, why don't you send a PM to PeterKG and ask him. He's been posting pics of his new 15" in another thread in this forum.
