Is 2gb of ram really needed for the powerbooks? I got the base ram amount, and I will probably update when my powerbook gets here. I ordered a 15inch pb. I was wondering if it was really needed?

If there are 1gb dims at a fairly good price where do you suggest I find them.
Is there a special size DDR333 ram for laptops, or can you get any kind? Do you suggest name brands, or generic?

In terms of RAM, you buy what you can afford. The more applications you run concurrently, the more RAM you need. 512-1024MB of RAM should be plenty. My Pismo PowerBook has been running with 512MB of RAM for over 3 years and still runs good, partly due to a lot of RAM.

If you can afford ~$650 for each 1GB stick of RAM, then be my guest. It never hurts to have a lot of RAM, except your wallet.

In specific you're looking for 1GB PC2700 (DDR333) SODIMM's

Hope this helps.

One gig modules are a stiff price. And size (physical size) specific for the ALPB line.

One gig total RAM would be plenty-with panther running and 6 or 7 apps open.

Well I'm pissed because I could have gotten a 1gb dim from apple for 400$ with my adc purchase. BUT it would have taken a month to ship it?! WTf is up with that?

Should I call apple and try to work something out, where they can send me the ram when it comes in, or what?

I think that 1G total is a "sweet spot" right now. 1G chips are outragously priced, but 512M chips are pretty darn cheap, especially if you have been buying RAM for a while (remember when *cough* 64M of quality RAM was over $200?). Trading the two 256 chips for one 512M ($90 EDU) is outrageous in itself, but the effective cost of $200 is just under what it would cost to buy two 512s and replace the single 256 with these.

I'm cringing at the thought of putting 2 or 4G of RAM into a G5 if/when I get one....

Hey, I thought "they" said RAM prices were going to bottom out this spring. Didn't seem to happen....

My question is would apple allow me to get my ram at the adc price, without having them put it in. Because I cannot wait around for 4 weeks because they dont have the 1gb dims in stock. Would apple do this for 400$ with the adc purchase or what?

Shoudl I give them a call to see what they say?
