Is anybody seeing the same issues in the new 12, 15, and 17" laptops that we have in the last version of the 17"? Such as that static sound, or the screetching, or the squealing? i'd love to know that before I upgrade.

I have the new and old 17" - both have the sizzling sound described in the past. But I believe I stumbled on a workaround (at least for the new 17" since I sold the old one) - install the Apple CHUD 3.0 tools. This adds a "CPU like" Program in the System Preferences. Disabling NAP (uncheck the box) immediately turns off the sizzle. Strange but true. My two cents...

weird. what is the "chud" program for anyway?

(And where is it in the system files? I did a search for it and couldn't find it in my system??)

Thanks

edit: nevermind. i found it on versiontracker.

How did you find out about this anyway? It seems so obscure?!

I've noticed that it seems to increase the temp of the machine...I noticed this because my fan has started going off more than usual. I restarted my machine and the temp started off at 122 degrees and now after maybe 5 minutes it's up at 132 and rising...the fan goes off just before 140

nope...unless you are in dead silence..then it might just drive you looney....THEN you might kill yourself...lol

I just turn it on and off as I need it. If I have music playing I don't worry about it..but if I'm trying to concentrate then I turn it back on. Although I guess the fan going off every 10minutes kinda counteracts that...lol

OMG! The awful stupid damn annoying screeching is gone!

So, there is hope after all. Apple could include this one way or another in a future OSX dot-release... actually, why haven't they done so already a long time ago if it can be solved in *@%!# software?!?

Anyway, thanks to the poster for making my day

Without your space helmet, Dave, you're going to find that rather difficult.

isn't really hard to find.

but i would really like to know what this NAB is good for and what it means if uncheck the box.

strange computer world, really strange.

you get rid of problems by unchecking a box.

man i wanna have an apple+z in the real world. that would be a nice nice feature.

Like pamelah said, turning off "Nap" makes your computer get hotter VERY quickly. The temperature increase happens on both "Highest" and "Reduced" performance settings, though the increase is much more dramatic on Highest. I see no difference whether the computer is plugged in or not....gets hot either way.

So this seems like a really bad idea for a long-term fix. You're much better off just switching to "Reduced" performance to make the machine quieter.

Let me qualify my statement with the fact I'm testing it on the original Rev. A 17". The Rev. B 17" may react differently, which is what the original poster tested.

So all I'm saying is people with the original 17", download Temperature Monitor if you're going to play with this Nap checkbox, to see precisely how your machine is reacting.

does this noise sound like one of the following:

1. soft bagpipes
2. someone swinging on a rusty swingset?

if so, maybe i do hear them ...
