It really depends on what I'm doing...

If I'm on battery surfing the web or writing a paper, I want to do it for as long as possible and I definitely don't need a Ghz G4.
If I'm on battery, showing off the capabilities of an Apple portable in Photoshop or something, you can be sure that I visit Energy Prefs and juice it!

I would like to see Apple insert a menu-bar add-on for processor speed setting. Particuarly now that this Automatic bus slewing feature is on many of their machines.

Me too, except on my TiBook (which is my girlfriend's now) I have it set to reduced while on battery. Whether I change it or not on my 17, I always get roughly the same battery life, unless I am doing PS work.

Power Adapter = Highest

Battery = Reduced, always. For my needs, when I'm on battery I never need full power.

Yeah, I noticed that to on my 12" PB. Thats why I just figured I'd leave it on highest for both modes. Plus, some GUI effects are smoother on my PB if it's CPU speed is set to highest - Dock magnification for example.

Also, does anyone know how much the CPU speed is reduced when using the reduced setting?

667Mhz (on any PB above 667Mhz, regardless of the exact full speed of the machine) and the L3 cache is disabled *if* it has any onboard.

I'm not positive if this is still true of the Sept. '03 PBs.

I find that whenever I set mine to reduced it always screws up iTunes for some reason.

If I'm plugged in or around the house/dorm and close to my AC adapter I leave it on Highest Performance, otherwise I put it on Longer Battery Life and turn the screen brightness way down. With that and the AirPort turned off I can get up to 4 hours.

They have. It's the battery extra.
