So, I finnaly decided to get the PB, its going to be the 1Ghz 15 inch and I was only wondering, I am getting the edu. discount on it, What is it that I need to show proof of me being a student? I have been trying to get a college ID but their machines are "broken" so I wont be able to get one until 2 weeks from now... I hope an enrollment verification letter and a class schedule is enought for it!!! I have to get it by the 27 in order to get the iPod deal....
Here is hoping...

i was asked the school and zip code ... that is it. i also printed out the edu discounted 'shopping basket' of everything i wanted before i took it into the store (this is all assuming you are going to an apple store)
go for the iPod deal too ... and a free printer (HP 5150)!
have fun!

It seems to me, that it is basically an honor system... I dont' know.... i only bought at my college store... but it seems to me, that you can buy anything from the .edu store if you wanted too.

negative on BTO ... but i took it there w/ the price just to make sure i got the price i was quoted plus, i added a few other things, and it's easier to have on paper vs. telling via word of mouth (can get confusing, for some reason)

if you can't supply a photo id, you could use some other proof you attend school, mainly class schedule, or logging on to the school email system. they just need something to print out/photocopy for the records.

I ordered my powerbook by phone today and got the educational discount. The conversation was pretty much this:
"Matt your a student right?"
"Yup"
"what school do you go to?"
"Simon Fraser University"
"Alright cool."
Done and done. No talk of student numbers or anything.

yeah it is pretty much on the honor system. Sometimes when you order through the school store they usually write down your SSN, because after all you are only suppose to have one system per year.

yeah I read the fine print... basically says they might audit your order and if you are not a student, they will make you pay the difference...
my bet is, they don't do this, because they dont' care that much.
but whatever, if you are a student you are home free, just order online and go!
if you arent' a student, but still a student at heart, looking to save a few hundred, and commit fraud, then you go do it too..

actually, now that i think of it, i was in their database ... and he said 'you've made a purchase here before?' ...
well, i made a purchase for my school's department ...
so, maybe my situation was a little off. but their methods of checking seem a bit lax ...

I went to an Apple store to get my PB. In order to get the student discount I needed to show an ID and a license. I think they are much more lax if you order over the phone.

I ordered online. The online store asked for my student number, and what university I went to.
I presume they had some sort of database for students then.
(I live in Canada, and go to the University of Calgary, btw)

I have a relative who buys through the online store with EDU pricing.
Basically the confirmation varies depending on what is being bought.
Place an order for an entry-level iBook and they'll pass it without a second glance.
Place an order for a G5 with 20" Cinema Display and they'll phone you and get you to fax a student/staff card and driver's license...

I have had to actually fax in my student ID and schedule in the past. Before they would even ship my order.
