going to get the 17" with the 4200rpm drive because i want the one in the store and don't want to wait for the BTO and the 5400rpm.

please tell me how the speed will differ between the 5400rpm drive and an external one of similar speed but connected to the FIREWIRE 800 port such as this product:
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...5.10.3.14.13.0

thanks in advance

Practicality tells me to have it installed CTO (5400). I would want to (and I did order one CTO) have the mobility/speed of the 5400 with me all the time. Built in. I wouldn't be pulling out my FW HD every time I was sitting in a Starbucks impressing everyone with my new ALPB. I wouldn't think you would be booting from your external either. Better performance inside.
