I didn't know that Firewire target disk mode worked with a Mac connected to a Windows PC. Are you sure it does?

It didn't work last time I tried. That was almost two years ago, but I bet it still doesn't work.

A standard 6-pin to 4-pin FireWire cable (the kind normally used for connecting a camcorder) will do the trick physically/electrically, but Windows doesn't know what to do with a Mac-formatted drive. You'll need to buy a third-party utility to let Windows access the Mac-formatted drive.

So once I have something like MacDrive installed on my PC does the pc have to be off and then turn it on when the mac is in the firewire target disk mode where it has the firewire icon. Is there any thing else to it?

Thanks

All you need is to install MacDrive on your Dell, hook up a 6-to-4-pin cable from the Powerbook to the Dell, start up the Mac holding "t", and start up the Dell. As soon as the Dell is done starting up it will recognize your PowerBook. I've done this with an iMac.
