I'm considering a new 15" pb. I do mostly web development and graphic design with some video editing tossed in for good measure (mostly short form). Will 512MB RAM generally be acceptable? (I know mileage may vary) I don't usually work with graphics files larger than a few MB (other than video). Also, can apple memory coexist happily with 3rd party memory? I was thinking of getting the powerbook with the single 512 chip ($90 extra educational) and adding another 512 if needed in the future, as this would save money in the long run ($90 for single 512 + $140 for another 512 vs. 2 512's at $140 ea.).

Thanks for any input you may have.

I installed 1G RAM on my iMac 17 bk I was using VPC and much multitasking. I am told that OS X loves RAM. I plan to buy PB 15 and going to do the same as you...have 512 on single slot and if needed, buy 512 from Crucial which will work with Apple...see the website below:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listmfgr.asp?cat=RAM

In one of the forums, an expert indicated that Crucial makes memory for Apple. Moreover, the consensus was that IG was the best especially if doing much video editing

Good Luck!
