For those who have purchased one of the newly released PowerBooks, was there any mention as to how the next release of Mac OS 10 (Panther) would be handled? Will you have to pay the full upgrade price or will you only have to pay $19.99 for the up-to-date program-thing?

I am really leaning towards upgrading to the 1.25Ghz 15.2" Albook from the 800mhz TiBook and would like to save as much on the purchase and later OS update as possible.

No, there is no mention, unless Apple was to make an anouncement down the road. I didn't expect anything and will look forward to buying and loading Panther on my new PB.

i have not heard any mention, but there were these funny "OS X 10.2" coupons inside the box.

it reads:

"Important
Apple Software Proof-of-Purchase Coupons

To get Mac OS updates -- and other special offers from Apple Computer -- you'll need the coupons below as proof that you've purchased the Mac OS software (see individual offers for terms and conditions). Be sure to keep the original coupons: you can't use a copy of the coupons as proof of purchase".

there are 3 of them

they say

"Software Coupon
Mac OS X
v10.2"

and they are numbered 1, 2, 3

not sure what they are for, etc...

I work for an Apple reseller. Apple has said nothing about free upgrades to Panther for recent hardware purchases. Which means that you shouldn't be expecting one. Panther isn't even an official product yet, why should you get an upgrade to it?

If you really want to get Panther without paying for an upgrade, you'll have to wait until it's released ... at least based upon any information currently available from Apple.

For some reason, I thought that Apple had a policy of selling OS updates for $19.99 (basically shipping costs) to those who purchase computers within a certain number of days of a major OS (non-software update control panel) release.

I've no problem purchasing the Panter update (as I have for all the others since 8.0), but I thought I would ask nonetheless.

Thanks for all replies.

They have done that AFTER the new OS was released and product on the shelves still had the old OS installed. When 10.2 was released, Apple told us to tell our customers that only those who purchased hardware AFTER the release date could purchase the upgrade for $19.99. In some cases people returned their hardware and repurchased it to get an invoice showing a later date.

They MAY do it if you purchase a new PB a few days before Panther is released ... though there's no way to know for certain when Panther will be released (see all of the PB release speculation threads).

If you really want to save the $129, just be patient.

I've never seen Apple actually use them before... maybe if they do offer buyers of a new unit the special upgrade price then they're needed?

I doubt that anyone buying a unit now will get a discounted upgrade. In the past Apple has only offered the discounts when the new OS ship date is announced.

If you buy a new machine within 30 days of a system software update you can use one of those 3 coupons and get the new system software for $19.99. So if I buy my new powerbook today and Panther is released before October 20th or so I can get Panther for $19.99. If Panther is released on Nov. 1st, tough beans for me, I have to pay full price.

Late October is the earliest I'd expect a ship time. Student price for Panther will be $70 or $80. Jaguar is currently $69.

that's good to know -- it's not the $129 that people have been complaining about.

The $129 price was for normal upgrades, it was less for students.
