I'm a student and i'm trying to decide which to get, the powerbook would be more portable, allowing me to take it to college although maybe the imac is faster and would last longer before i need to upgrade? My limit is £1'700 and i don't need a cd burner. I'm leaning towards the Powerbook at the moment though maybe there is some reason i should go for thet imac instead? Anyone got some advice?

Three thoughts:

1. They're probably close enough speed-wise to leave the decision to desktop vs. laptop and budget considerations.

2. Why does your sig already say "1.25GHz 15" Powerbook" if you haven't decided?

3. No computer "needs" to be replaced unless it breaks irreparably. Either machine will continue to do what you bought it for. Neither is particularly upgradable.

That said: If you can afford it, get the Powerbook. I have a 12", and I can't imagine ever going back to a desktop as my main machine again.

you use a 12" as your main machine? Do you use an external display?

I've currently got a 466MHz G4 powermac with 17" Apple Studio Display. I might sell the tower and keep the display, mouse and monitor for use at home.

I've never upgraded the ram (its still at 256) so i'm hoping for a significant speed boost with 1.25 GHz and 512 ram.

i think i'm going to go for the 15" powerbook, it gives me a desktop replacement and a portable.

I'm going to order it tomorrow, though i'm not sure wether to get the 60GB or 80GB hard drive, its only £50 difference, so i'l prob get the 80GB.

Thanks for you help.

My iMac 500 and Pismo Powerbook upgraded to a G3 900 were about the same in Snappiness™. There's a great deal more to computer performance than megahertz (ah, the grand old MegaHertz Myth, you hear it so little these days) and ALSO a great deal more to computer performance than benchmarks.

What I mean by the same was I could open up Safari, open 4 windows, and go through each one autotabbing into seven or eight bookmarks. No noticeable slowdown outside Safari (reading Mail or navigating Finder or skipping in iTunes - I didn't try DVD playing at the same time ), and I could look at the top page top tab of Safari as soon as it loaded.

That's the wonders of an efficient multitasking system on 4 year old hardware. I've bought a 15" Combo and am waiting anxiously myself.
Actual conversation between UCLA and Stanford during a login on early Internet - U: I'm going to type an L! Did you get an L? S: I got one-one-four. L! U:Did you get the O? S: One-one-seven. U: <types G> S: The computer just crashed.
