hi all.

compared to the TiBook, the PB17 RevB display lid (LCD) swings fairly easily ... whereas the TiBook's lid is 'stiff'.

is there any way to tighten up the display lid hinge so that it is less 'floppy'?

has anyone else noticed this, or is this a characteristic (and a good one?) of AlBooks?

I've heard the AlBooks are "counterweighted" ("countersprung"?) to raise with less effort, and rely less on friction than the previous PBooks. So I'm guessing the different feel is intentional. My PBG3 is stiff and I don't like it that way really. Plus, I think those stiff hinges become worn over time from the friction.

Now, if it's floppy enough to sag on it's own when you don't even touch it, that's not effortless, that's a problem!

Sadly, the ones I've seen on display were not set up to allow me to play with the angle.

What you are experiencing is the same for the Rev A 17inchers.

There doesn't seem to be an easy way to tighten it up. Over time, you will adapt, as I have. There is an angle that you can't exceed and the screen will stay put. If not, it will begin to close.

I still remember the first time I noticed this screen creep when the screen hit me in the head when I lifted it up when in bed. It was really funny, and then I looked to be sure I didn't shatter the screen

The Tibooks are alot firmer. I wonder if the new 15inchers act the same or if it is the shear size and weight of the 17" that makes it more prone.

The 17" rev a and b are like this. The 12" and the new 15" Al are much firmer. It's clear that the 17" was designed for easy movement when on a desk. It works great for that, but is less suitable when used on a lap. That's actually one of the reasons I'm replacing my rev a 17" with a 15" Al. The 17" is a great machine but was clearly not designed or intended for lap use.

Although the placement of the keys far from you is more lap-friendly than desk-friendly.
