there were several rumours that the old 17" Powerbooks have actually USB 2.0 connectors but they just haven't been enabled.

in the mac os 10.2.8 article there is the sentence:

"Includes support for USB 2.0 devices, including PCI and PC cards for computers that do not include USB 2.0 hardware"

so how do i get to know if the rumours were right or not???

i can't see it in the system profiler.

All that sentence says is that the OS has USB 2.0 support, even when using a USB 2.0 PC Card or PCI card. I don't read in that sentence anything implying that it'll magically convert a USB 1 port to a USB 2 one -- software can't do that.

I believe that some G4 desktops had USB2 hardware that was not enabled by the version of the OS that shipped with the computer. There was a nice set of data on this at xlr8yourmac.com earlier this year. I believe USB2 was successfully enabled via a hack.

The question is whether this same hack enabling will be possible from an updated OS in the future.

Apparently, that was a myth.

The chip was indeed a USB 2.0-capable controller chip, but it was hardwired to the motherboard in USB 1.1-mode only.

So the hack doesn't work.
