Hi folks - I've just bought a Cinema Display for my Dual 867 G4 and now my wife wants one for her iBook (new 900MHz model). Of course the display is ADC and not VGA, so it won't natively work, but I'm sure there is a way. I thought I'd ask the knowledgable folk here for some pointers

My first question to ya'll is whether or not it is possible to connect the iBook to the Cinema Display, and if so how and what do I need to make it work. Saving money is good, but I'd be willing to pay for her to use one of these displays if need be.

The second question is what resolution can be expected on a Cinema Display powered by a new iBook, and if only 1024 is there some way to boost this?

And lastly I know her machine should mirror her iBook LCD when hooked up to a monitor. If she has a keyboard/mouse connected can the iBook lid be closed to work or does it have to be opened?

Loads of thanks in advance folks. Her birthday's coming up and I'd love to treat her to something like the Cinema Display.

First of all you practically need a hack. See the dual monitor thread here.

That hack looks to be for spanning the screen, which isn't necessarily what she's wanting to do. However I have filed the URL to implement that later if required - thanks. Any idea on the whether or not it's possible to get the Cinema Display 20 working on an iBook and how to go about it?

Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

Thanks KG, it looks great, but unforunately it won't work with an iBook. The quote at the bottom is:

"This conversion box will not work with stock video card in the G3 Desktops, any iBooks, G3 Powerbooks, or any iMac."

There's got to be a way for this to work. Shame on Apple for not offering a solution

Why don't you get a non-Apple display? That way you won't have to spend extra money on the VGA/ADC converter.

Stink different.

We're very much an Apple household, with loads of gear covering the place. She wants the same screen I've bought now and spending money on a converter is not an issue; its finding one that works

You can do it in a few easy steps:

1) Sell iBook on eBay.
2) Buy 12" Powerbook
3) Buy Cinema Display + DVI to ADC adaptor.

Result = New laptop, smaller enclosure, bigger screen, happier wife, more sex for slapdash

Thanks PG, and lord knows that's always part of the goal

I'm trying to convince her to sell her iBook and offered to split the difference on either a PB or G5 tower. I've resolved myself that it is the only solution for her to have one of these displays.

Thanks everyone for your responses!

Yes but if you don't span screens you can't get higher then 1024x768.

This is one time where you need to ditch the apple product and go with a different monitor. Cheaper and much easier to deal with considering the ibook issues.

If you don't implement the monitor spanning hack, you might as well buy the crappiest monitor available. The screen resolution of the external monitor is going to look terrible with mirroring on.
