On average about 3:30, about 2:00 if doing continuous large compiles (100 % CPU usage)

I want to know what Apple plans on doing to counter Intel's Centrino chipsets. I read an article today that included an interview with the head of Intel's Mobile Platforms group, claiming that next year there will already be a handfull of laptops out that can get 7-8 hours of typical use on a single charge and that will be the standard by early 2005.

I need a laptop for law school in January and I was set on the 12" PB, I'll probably still get it but I wish Apple could do more for battery life.

P.S. Why does the 12" PowerBook have a more powerfull battery than the 15"? Anybody know why?

Because the 12" is a 1Ghz and 15" is 1.25, more power is used. Plus the screen is bigger, uses more battery. Just an obvious guess.

This is real good news though, for me.

better batteries cost more. i'd be willing to add an extra 100$ for 3-4 more hours of batt life on top of what apple has today.
