Athlon 64 running at 2Ghz is already available for notebooks since the desktop and mobile chip are almost the same (if not the same).

Damn. By the time we get G5 PBs the competition will be running at over 3Ghz and 64bit (We all know they don't run OSX but we need all the power we can get).

So? Read the article. The current version is for bulkier laptops. The heat is better disipated in thicker notebooks than slim ones. At least they have serious power.
They also have a power saving technology that enables them to run cooler and slower under light us. Same with the G5. But they have the CPU now and we don't.
A version for slim notebooks will be available in several months. G5 Powerbooks are over a year away. Damn, I want IBM to push this damn thing before the Wintel lot not only have 64 bit laptops but perhaps even multi-core CPUs on desktops and power notebooks.

1) why buy a portable that is big and heavy only to scale the 'potential speed down?
2) if your workflow/computing needs are based solely on CPU power or FPS then you should have a desktop
3) all the usual gripes that go on about PC laptops.
Look.. yes, speed is important. But the raw CPU picture in a laptop is secondary to the entire package. And I do not believe a maker has yet to truly match Apple Al series.

always with the speed arguments...
this forum often becomes no more than a "mine is bigger than your's" playground.
no one can match Mac's OS...
no one
go play with your faster centrinos and athlons all you want
but i'll be at the finish line first with my rock-solid UNIX-based OS that rarely crashes while you enjoy the blue screen of death at every turn...
after 1000's of hours in front of windows-based pc's i speak from experience
enjoy the whole "experience" of owning the Mac....
enjoy the ride... not just the destination

I actually work for a PC company now (I cant say which one), but back when I did work for apple I NEVER exprienced a crash while using the Apple systems.
Now that I work for a MAJOR PC manufacturer, our systems haulted in one way or another every day I have been there, no joke.
I am not biased one way or another but seriously the more you puch XP the greater the chance it will crash, that does not seem to be the case with OSX

For F's sake. It always goes back to the OS even in a hardware forum.

Maybe that's because while the machine is the vessel, the OS is the reason and the experience.

Bingo.
Do you *really* want a laptop that pumps 89W? Christ. That's absurd. You need that kind of power, you need a desktop until a few more years bring us cooler chips...and that's on the Mac AND PC sides.

I bet if Apple did make a bulkier laptop with a G5 at 85W nobody would be complaining. After all, it runs OSX!

How the hell do you even know that? Because of some second hand report that Steve Jobs said that the PowerBook would get the G5 by the end of next year? So what? By the end of next year means that in December 2004 you will be able to buy a G5 PowerBook. That doesn't mean you won't be able to buy one in November, or October, or even in July. If I were to place your assumption into a logical statement it would be something like this:
Steve Jobs said the G5 PowerBook will be available by the end of 2004.
The end of 2004 is 12/31/2004.
Therefore, we won't be able to get a G5 PowerBook until 12/31/2004.
I hope you're smart enough to see the fallacy there. I dub thy argument invalid!
