Hi all. First post, and also a Mac newbie, so be kind.

I have an old G3 notebook (400mhz, firewire) which had a bad drive. The problem is, the guys that took that drive out and pronounced it bad disconnected the board-to-drive cable from both ends, and now it's just loose and sitting in there.

So i got a new drive, plugged in that end, and can't figure out where the other end plugs in to on the board...anyone know? And how do i take apart the lappy further to get to it...so far, i've flipped off the keyboard, removed the heat shield, removed the hard drive frame / cage thingy, and stuck a drive in it.

Any help or comments appreciated...

It's best to refer to a service manual for your specific model. On my Wallstreets, it was easy enough as there was no data cable, the connector on the board slotted directly into the drive.

Here's a good place for service manuals:

Thanks, that was useful.

But, now that i have it installed, i can't seem to power the thing on. I connected the adaptor, put in the battery and the drive, and made sure everything was screwed in nice and tight, and there's no response from the thing at all.

It said i could press the button on the battery to check the lights, but NO lights come on when i press it (it has a light that comes on when the battery is totally drained). So, for that light to work, i'm assuming that the internal battery has to work, right? So does that mean my internal battery is dead?

Where would i get a new one, and what do you think it would cost for one? The one that's in there now is connected properly. Is there anything else that could be the problem, or anything else i should check?

The internal battery is rechargeable.

Check to make sure the CPU card is properly seated.

I took the cpu card out and put it back in (this is the module with the ram chips on either side, yes?) but still no difference...no lights, no reaction at all to being plugged in, even when i click on the button on the removable battery.

Anything else that could be wrong? I know she had the techs from the U. of Chicago look at it, so they might have left something disconnected, or forgotten to seat something properly in there...any other things i should look at, other than trying to take everything apart and putting it all back together from scratch?

Thanks,

Dave.
