I was wondering what's the drive speed of the ipod? 4200?
I do a lot of audio recording and sequencing and I was wondering if I could use my soon to be here powerbook with the ipod acting as a harddrive?
Programs would be on the mac while the data is being accessed from the ipod? is that putting the little guy through too much trouble? am I going to see a lot of difference going from 10,000 rpm to 4200 ipod?
anyone here use the ipod for data storage? cheers.

as another quick off-topic IPOD question
what new cars are coming with stock radios that allow inputs from the IPOD?
i guess the new volks Beattle does.... with that commercial and free offer with the car...

but....
does anyone know any other manufacturers that have audio inputs?
i was recently sitting in a Honda Element in the showroom.. i think that one had them

any others?

I think it probably is too much for it. I heard that if Apple are required to fix your iPod and they find an installed system on it this will void the warrantee. I realise that you aren't running a system from it but nevertheless it isn't designed for intensive disk access. I ran speed disk on mine once and it got hot to the point that the screen started to turn black! I use mine for some backup and I do have a basic system installed which I boot from to repair my Powerbook but I don't think intensive use is recommended.
Regarding speed, I am guessing the iPod is 4200 compared to your Powerbooks 5200?

Wow, going from a 10,000 rpm fast HD to a 4200 rpm slow drive like the iPod is going to be very noticable running OSX. It will work (I am typing on a PB with such a drive), but my next purchase will be a 7200 rpm notebook drive to add a little zip to the OS.

As for voiding warranty, Apple sold these as both mp3 players and external HDs, so I cannot see that concern to be big in my book.
