I replaced my 15" 667MHz Ti PB with a new 15" 1.25 GHz Al PB. Both have 1 GB of RAM and "stock" hard drives.
I tested the two PBs side-by-side with conditioned and fully-charged batteries. Screen brightness was set to maximum, and the power setting was set to maximum processing effort.
I played 2 DVD movies in the machines, starting them both at the same time.
The new 15" Al PB gave a warning (running on reserve) at 1:14, and shut down totally at 1:21 (total life= 1 hour 21 minutes).
The older 15" 667 PB shut down at 1:31 (total battery life=1 hour 31 minutes).
The new 15" Al Pb has a smaller battery and lower wattage (Al= 46 watt-hours at 12.8 volts) than the older Ti (55.3 watt-hours at 14.4 volts).
My conclusion from the test is that battery life of the new Al 15" PB is slightly less than that of my older PB.
Too bad, especially because the extra battery I ordered with the new PB will not ship for 3 weeks yet and I'm leaving on a trip next week.

? That said more than 3.5 hours would be nice.

Thanks a LOT for this comparison, PLEASE post some more battery life estimates, like light typing with Airport on, etc..
Anyone think Panther will help the 15Al" stretch it's battery life out a little more.

uhh just a guess, but was your tibook battery kinda old? Batteries lose life as they get older, so this comparison is crap. I know this because i have a 3month old 1Ghz tibook, and i've watched a 2.5 hour dvd with full brightness and airport on and still has a little bit of battery left. i don't think your comparison was valid.

Unfortunately, the Ti battery is less than 6 months old (bought it as a spare at the Apple store in Chicago).
I did the test under "worst-case" conditions with everything at full power. I don't know where you found a 2.5 hour DVD to watch.
I expect that I could reduce processor speed and illumination and get more time, but the older Ti may still outlast the new 15" Al.
The test was just meant to compare similar conditions on the 2 machines -- not best life span.
I look forward to "best-case" tests from other users (2 people typing in MS Word for 3 hour on 2 machines, a Ti and an Al )
