My PB G4 15" 1GHz arrived today. Here are my initial impressions:

(1) It needs more RAM. 256 is not enough. I knew this when I bought it but its cheaper to buy it third party, obviously.

(2) Snappy! This thing, even without the RAM I want, is noticeably faster than my Ti 667 with 768 mb RAM.

(3) Quiet! I haven't heard the fan or the hard drive yet. This is NICE! Maybe I won't be embarassed to use it in class now.

(4) Sharp, crisp, bright display. Much better than my Ti.

(5) Window redraw, etc., are much faster now. This new vid card is awesome.

(6) Fast dial-up! I don't know how, but the modem sped things up. Both are 56k, and my ISP is V.92... could this new V.92 instead of V.90 modem have sped things up? I went from 26400bps to 41333bps. The fiber optic cable comes within 200 yards of my home, but no luck yet on getting broadband (and I'm in the middle of a metropolitain area of 1 million).

That's it for now, folks! Thought someone might appreciate this update.

Same here on the 867 MHz 12" PowerBook. My G4 iMac got only 26400 at best, but the PowerBook (plugged into the same outlet and with the same cord) gets 48000 or even 51000 bps. I made the modem and other networking preferences on the iMac match the 'Book, but it's still a few thousand bps slower.

Is this a hit or miss thing? I looked at a 15" and 17" Alu at Compusa and the screens were very dull with brightness at 100%. Is there something else to change to make the screen brighter? Are there just some 'books that don't have a screen as bright as others. Someone said the Toshiba 17" has the same screen as the 17" PowerBook but the 17" I looked at was very dull in brightness compared to the Toshiba in the store. Also I've noticed on the Apple Support forum people are noting the same thing.

I have the money in hand now to buy the 15" but reading about all of these white spots and multiple dead pixels on new machines is scaring me and the brightness on the demo unit bothers me.

I go tmy 15' 1.25ghz yesterday.
I ran pixelcheck and the screen is flawless (knock on wood)

CD burning feels much faster (cause it is)

Also the machine is alot quicker than my 12' 867mhz

The screen is very nice, the 12' had a rather dull screen even on full brigthness.

One thing that might be interesting, I have not noticed any speed problems with the 4200rpm harddrive. It is very quick. I am very glad I saved the money and battery life on my powerbook

Best of luck

Could you post some comments on heat, 15" vs. 12"?
