There is a new shareware utility for tracking temperatures with Aluminum PowerBooks. Its called ThermographX and is at http://www.kezer.net/thermographx.html . The author has tested it with the 12" and 17" and I've run it on a 15". On the 15" there are four sensors, CPU/Intrepid Bottomside, CPU Bottomside, Power Supply Bottomside, and Battery. One of my biggest complaints with the 15" is heat and this utility is interesting to use. Highest on all sensor except battery so far have been 145F (battery highest so far is 102F). This is when the fan kicks in. One other interesting thing I've noticed is that even with the energy saver control panel settings the same for battery and AC, when on AC on the desk, it runs much hotter than when on battery. When on the desk on AC the temp in areas feels almost burning hot. Unplugging it and putting it on my lap and in a few minutes it's still very warm but definitely much cooler.

As an aside, are there any new 15" users running Panther beta out there? Any comments on difference in battery life or heat?

Not a 15" user, but on 12" there is longer battery life and SLIGHTLY less heat.
