Take a look at this...
http://www.titleii.com/tipb/why2.jpg
This is supposedly a 15" Ti next to a 17" Al. Comparing the two, the 17" doesn't look much bigger at all but in the store, the 17" seemed like a monster... of course there were not 15" ones to compare it to.
Is it just an optical illusion from the camera angle that it doesn't look much bigger or what?

The reason that the 17 always looked big in the Apple Store was because it was always setup next to a 12".
I'm a little sensitive about people saying my 17 is too big....

Does anyone else have a 15" and 17" that they could post pics of side by side whether it's 15" tibook or albook.
Thanks!

If you look at the picture you can tell two things:
1.) It's a wide angle lens (you can tell from the curve of the table edge) so the whole is distorted compared to normal view).
2.) The 17" is a tiny bit farther back on the table. Combined with the wide angle this makes it look smaller.
In reality the 17" is definitely bigger than a 15". It's something you can get used to, but don't believe this picture.

The photo's a little misleading--look at the keyboards which should be the same--but it's true, the 17" is NOT that much bigger.
The 17" is 10% thinner than the new 15", and footprint-wise, it only adds .85" to each side, and .35" front and back. Less than an inch all around. (Apple.com has a pic of them all stacked, for comparison.)
The 15" AlBook is 143 cubic inches--only 9% smaller by volume than the 17" at 157. (Lighter too, though!)
(In fact, the 17" is smaller in volume than the 14" iBook! Even more surprising to me: the little 12" iBook is closer in volume to the 17" than it is to the 12" PowerBook! Thin makes a difference.)

Is it me, or does the 17" display (in that pic) look a bit washed out compared to the TiBook? It reminds me of the 17" iMac which has a nice display, but it's a bit washed out for my taste.

ergh yeah. The 15" ti is the only powerbook for about 80% of the trolls in this forum
Anyway, it's true. The 17" isn't THAT much bigger. What it IS is wider, and that shouldn't be a huge deal if you want a big laptop.
It's still smaller then all the other 17" laptops out there

Come on people...let's be a little less lazy here. I'm sure you visit the apple website at least once a day anyway...start keeping your eyes open!
go look at the apple website. they have a photo of all three stacked on each other.

First off, most of Apple's images are rendered and not actual product. Secondly, before you call someone lazy, learn to read... "side by side". Stacked hardly counts as side by side. I was wanting to see a real life picture similar to the one I found but more in perspective.

Wow - I'm famous. I took that photo and posted it at my website, www.titleii.com. So... if the 17" *that* much bigger than the 15" - no, of course not.
A few comments about this particular image:
* Yes, a wide angle lens - but we're talking about 30-32mm, nothing super extreme like 12-17mm.
* The back of both Powerbooks is about equal - in other words, they're lined up at about the same point. The screen on the 17" is pushed back more (angle wise) than the 15".
* The keyboards are exactly the same width.
Ok, tonight I'm lazy - this photo isn't nearly as good as the other one - but I think you'll see in this photo that the two are pretty close in size. As the other guy pointed out, the Apple people aren't stupid - they always put the 17" next to the 12". I've never seen a 15" next to a 17" in the Apple stores.

I can not speak for all stores but I know that the one at Tyson Corner has them arranged from smallest to bigget 12, 15, 17. My girlfriend has a 17 I have a 15 and there may not be a huge difference but it is very noticeable

screen with the frame included:
12 inch PB is 93.74 square inches
15 inch PB is 130.15 square inches
17 inch PB is 157.08 square inches
This means: 15 inch has approximately 40% more screen real estate than the 12 inch and the 17 inch has approximately 20% more.

My local store has the 15" TiBook next to the 17" AluBook. The 17" is significantly heavier and unwieldy. It's not THAT much bigger but once you start playing with both side by side (picking them up etc.) you realize just how much more portable the 15" really is. The 17" is a beautiful machine, but it's simply too bulky for my tastes. My next machine will definitely be 15" or possibly smaller... when it sports the G5.
Also, I've noticed that the TiBook has the brighter screen, by a slight margin. Both are much brighter than the 12" AluBook's screen though. Next to the TiBook, the 12" looks distinctly yellow.
