After a visit to the store to see if the genius bar has any info on the battery problems and 10.2.8 (concerning drop times of up to an hour on battery readouts and post 10.2.8 installations) I was surprised that the genius I spoke to (a guy) started to be very cautious of my questioning. He said that he had never heard of such a problem and that so far Apple is reporting it as a Network problem and that is all he had heard of. I was amazed that he had not seen any problems concerning battery times....In fact I went on to chat with another nicer genius who happily went about to log in my complaint of the loss in Battery time after the initial instal (official update from Software update) 10.2.8. I had explained to her of my battery recalibration and PRAM and PM resets....but still I had the problem of the battery wacky readout and she acknowledged that at 90 something percent the readout was depleting too fast (in time readout and Percentage)
While I was there I took the liberty to log an issue concerning the carbon/grease like substance that was oozing from my display and leaving streak marks (straight line and not finger prints mind you) on the aluminum which could be wiped away but the main concern is the actual leakage of whatever that thing was. SO now I have made it an official log to Apple at an Apple store SOHO where I purchased my PB 17" Rev A powerbook.
WHile I was telling the genius of my Carbon/grease (whatever it is ) substance that was left on my Powerbook surface once in a while, the first genius that I talked to for assistance at the bar made a comment to me in front of another customer while he was servicing him, and said that maybe it was cryptonite......
hmm....maybe this genius was not such a genius afterall...However the one that logged my complaint nicely was totally professional in handling my woes...with 10.2.8 and the grease/carbon effect....
Hmm what a day....
other than that, no problems with 10.2.8...my network was fine...I have broadband and use airport extreme around the house with no problems....and now I just operate the powerbook without the battery in its place as instructed by Apple via Applecare hotline AND genius at Genius Bar SOHO...(afraid that my battery calibration would be screwed in the long run and thus no battery while running at home on AC only.)

Are you sure you weren't in Boston ... Northshore Mall, Peabody? 'Sounds a lot like "Chris."
Where does Apple find these people?

Maybe if he had opened up a bit and took a customer in distress with a 3000+ dollar machine from a company that he works for at the Genius bar, he might have heard of such a problem in the first place....I don't know.....my thoughts are my opinions....but I think as a person who is employed to listen and to assist a customer in the Genius Bar section should be able to have an open mind instead of poking fun at them....don't you think?
However most of them I do regard as true professionals in work ethics....
Actually now I that I recall..when I told him the problem and that other people were having that same issue with the 10.2.8 and battery problem on powerbooks....he said that there are many wackos out there claiming things....(does this include my best friend who has a powerbook with the same problem as me....does this include me too) I was taken back by his remarks.
And no, I was not in Boston......I was at the SOHO store in NYC...hehe
After all the problems...I still love Apple because of the OS and hardware they come out with....really incredible engineering. But sometimes bad apples on an Apple tree can make your face go sour....

They actually, by and large, seem to make a point of not hiring the geeks who know what they're talking about. Instead, they hire the people who will best promote the Official Cupertino Gospel, even if it means spewing pure effluence to the customer.
It's not just Boston. Or NYC. It's every single Apple Store I've been to, and all the ones I've ever heard of.

There is no leakage of anything. This is simply the frame of the LCD screen rubbing on the palm rest area. I think Apple could have done a slightly better job with the silicone/rubber pads to keep the screen from pressing down. The new 15" seems to have them on the sides towards to the top corners which is what the 17" needs.
A slight flaw in the Rev A 17" model. Hopefully it is better in the Rev B.
If this is happening a lot, consider a better bag that does not put as much pressure on the unit (I am very mobile with mine and it happens maybe once every 3 weeks). Or you can also get the little pads to stick on like this.
But of course Apple should address this, or at least, acknowledge it.

so RayX (first, thanks for a reply) let me get this straight...you say when Aluminum scratches or touches another aluminum surface (screen side touching the palmrests) it creates line mark? You do know that these lines are removable right? I mean they do come off with some dab of liquid on a soft cloth or whatever I wipe with...shamois for instance....
In anycase (hehe "case") apple should address the public who purchased the 17" PB as you say it is "FLAWED" concerning this mark on the palmrest area due to this contact with the lid along with the new battery problems with the 10.2.8 update..... Jeez I hope they fix that update soon...my battery feels all lonely sitting in the Zero Halliburton case I have for my PB17" Well at least I don't transport this monster now and thus no lines on the palm rests cause it is now operating in Desktop mode...hehe

It's not a flaw. My 17" Powerbook did the same thing for the first month I owned it. It hasn't done it since. The black lines always wiped right off, and now you can't even see anything was ever there (so I know it didn't scratch the palmrests.) It seems to be just part of the break-in.
