here's the description of the extended warranty on the credit card:
"Subject to the terms of the original Manufacturer's Warranty, not exceeding 5 years, Extended Warranty automatically doubles the original period of warranty, subject to a maximum extension of 1 year"
Now, does it automatically extend my apple warranty to 2 yrs?
Or am i missing something here?

That would be a yes, I'd say
In the second year, it would not be Apple you contacted to have any work paid for--I suppose they'd reimburse you for what Apple charged for the work?

Yeah, it'll double your original warranty to two years.
But the thing is that I think if you want AppleCare you'll still have to get it within the first year. But since it isn't a original manufacture's warranty I don't think they'll double the AppleCare.
Which means you'll be paying $350 for the 3rd year of warranty.
If this was the case, I think I would just skip AppleCare completely.

You used to be able buy AppleCare for a PowerBook after it has expired, but you will have to pay an inspection fee from a local apple service center, I don't know if this is still available.

I usually do use a gold card on electronic goods for the extended warranty but didn't this time for my Al 15. My reasoning went something like this: Most failures occur in the first year (actually first week) so extension is not needed. I have never had to fill out a warranty claim with a card service. The card warranty is administered a third party (not the credit card issuer), requires lots of documentation of problem, and may have a deductable. I just decided that it might be more trouble than it is worth. And finally, the rebate on my debit/credit card gave me another $150 off on my purchase. Which will pay for a large part of AppleCare should I want it after a year if my Book is being difficult.
By the way, any problem that you have documented before the warranty expires effectively extends the warranty on that item. I had screens replaced on my Ti 500 into my third year of ownership.

Certain credit cards do offer this - especially American Express. It's a great service that these cards provide (secret tip - if you rent cars, especially on overseas trips, many cards will also automatically cover your insurance! this is a big plus as that would normally add $25-$30/day to auto rentals!).
As to AppleCare, I agree with the statement about most issues ocurring within the first year. Unlucky me, my Pismo's motherboard crapped out **one week** after my original warranty expired! Argh!
