Hi all,

Just purchased 2 ibooks for the mrs and me. Very impressed so far however if anyone could provide the answers to these "Newbie" questions that would help a lot.

1. I have a downloaded file on the desktop 365mb zip file which i want to delete but every time i move it to the trash it says it is being used by another task right now. I cannot figure out why a task is using this file as I have restarted the machine several times, How can i find out which task is using this file and preventing me from deleting it. And how would i end this task.

2. I am having trouble deciding on which is the best browser to use. I have decided on either Camino, Safari or Firebird. Your recommendations would be appreciated.

3, I cannot get a realplayer stream link or windows media link to play when clicked in Safari it directs me to realplayer or microsoft pages. Even though realplayer and windows media player are installed and working??

4. I have heard bad things about Norton for MAC OS X which is the best software I should buy for defraging and general maintenance of the machines also what anti virus and firewall software?

5. What is the best BINARY FILE newsreader or downloader for MAC OS X?

6. Is it true that MAC OS X 10.2.8 will stop the popping noise my ibooks make when running on battery from the right hand speaker i think it is a power management issue with the amp powering up and down?

Sorry for all the questions I appreciate you guys taking the time to help the newb .

Cheers

D.

1. Hope this helps: http://www.macdebate.com/6/ubb.x?a=t...mp;m=733603843

2. Use them all. I use camino, safari, and IE. Why? Because often there's something about some page that one of these won't handle. For example, there's an MSN groups web page - safari won't SUBMIT a reply when I click that button. OTOH, IE simply screws up about 1/3 the time on that same page.

3. See what I mean?

4. dunno

5. beats me

6. 10.2.8 was released and then "recalled." Caused battery problems of some kind. He who lives by the bleeding edge, dies by the bleeding edge.

1. I think you'll have to a search or try asking at the OS X forum.

2. Mostly I use Safari. It works great for most pages, but for some sites I use IE, and a few times Opera (lots of font size options) or a Mozilla-based browser. I'm not sure whether development is continuing on Camino.

3. RealOne is working here... Did you install it properly, starting it up once afterwards? Win Media Player uses a non-standard plug-in that I think only works in IE. But WMP9 is coming soon, probably around Panther time. I'd guess it will work with at least Safari by then.

4. OS X includes a firewall, ipfw. There are some software, like Brickhouse, that will let you make your own advanced rules. Again, for defragging I would do a search. Is it even necessary? For disk catalog repair, look at DiskWarrior. .Mac includes Virex, but I admit I don't use it very often. There are very few Mac viruses, and I don't receive Word files with potential macro stuff. I would recommend a look at Cocktail for misc troubleshooting like cache removal etc.

5. Have to pass on this...

6. Here too...

If you haven't been to Versiontracker already, I'd recommend browsing and searching for apps there.

Good luck!

1. Check your read/write permissions

2. I use IE and Safari. Depends what you're doing. I like the options. Safari's tabs are cool. IE tends to load more stuff.

3, I'm having trouble with this myself. But ya know I have tried some links with Windows and Mac and have the same prob on both... Looking forward to response you might get here.

4. I use Virex. Has done good things at work with our cross=platform environment. Free with .mac

5. Mozilla

6. Don't touch 10.8.2 right now. As for the popping, I have minimal. But it is rather annoying.

Hi and welcome to MacNN! iBooks are great machines (despite my rants about 10.2.8).

I'll respond to your questions....

1. You could run Top and see which processes are active.....but a quick and dirty way is to boot into OS 9 and drag the file to trash and empty the trash. Your OS X desktop will be found in Users>(your account)>Desktop.

2. I use Safari mostly, and IE for anything it can't open. I also use OmniWeb, Camino and Firebird occasionally, but mostly to check my own html, which is the only reason I ever use Netscape.

3. There is no RealPlayer for OS X. The player for Real Media for OS X is RealOne. If it is installed properly and configured, it should work but you may have to double-click the downloaded file directly to launch RealOne. Others here can help you setup your browsers and RealOne.
I don't use WMP mostly because I've tried it and found it to be very buggy and unstable. I use VLC to play any media files that Quicktime or RealOne can't play.

4. Defragging really isn't really needed in OSX. For general maintainance I run fsck from Single User Mode (much like a Terminal window). An easier way to do this if you don't like typing commands and don't want to risk doing any damage while logged in as Root, is to boot from the OS X Installer CD, and run Disk Utilities, and verify and repair the hard drive. I've heard great things about Disk Warrior and plan to buy it soon.

5. Don't know, but I love Watson's iMedia tool!

6. 10.2.8 and I are not on friendly terms.

You might want to pick up of David Pogues OS X: The Missing Manual from O'Reilly Press. It's well written and full of information. OS X is really user friendly but is also a very, very powerful OS.
Scooters are more fun than computers and only slightly more frustrating

Most problems with RealOne Player and Safari can be resolved by updating to the latest version of Safari or by resetting the player (by holding down control and shift when launching the RealOne Player application; a dialog will then ask if you want to reset the player.)

NPR has some additional tips on RealOne Player & browser issues at
