Man, I just put another 512mb of ram in my 17" (for a total of a gig) and I'm amazed at the performance of Virtual PC running XP Pro and WinOffice. Amazing.

Thanks for the info. I've been debating trying it for a while. Unfortunately I need XP for some obscure Paramedic apps. I have a gig MB too and was looking for some time. Was the install difficult?

Dan --- do they offer WinOffice for a student discount? It didn't come with XP, right?

i'd still recommend win2000 in VPC... if you get a great performance boost while running XP, imagine how much better it will run with win2000.

hmm, when running win 98 on my rev a 17" it was incredibly painful (with 512mb allocated out of 1gb total)

wonder how it would be on my 12" with 768 with win 2000

I think what people get from VPC is very subjective. One person's "surprisingly fast" may be another person's "painful." It works, and lets me do some testing in Windows without carrying two laptops--that's all I need.

I can't imagine anyone saying that Win98 with the 17" is painful - 98 has a much lighter footprint than Win2000 or WinXP. I've got 256 dedicated to XP with a gig in the machine and it's working fine. Is it as fast as a new P4? No - but easily as fast as a PIII.

For the other guy who was asking about EDU prices - yes, check your campus bookstore.
