....Some real world comparisons to look at:

Powerbook G4 17 inch 1.33 GHZ, 512mb of ram, 60GB 7200 rpm Hitachi HD, OS 10.2.7

Powermac G4 Dual 1.25 GHZ, 512mb ram, 120GB HD OS 10.2.8

Both using Photoshop 7.0.1

Boot photoshop

PBG4 5.0 seconds
Dual 1.25 7.0 seconds

Open 60mb Tiff file

PBG4, 2.3 seconds
Dual 1.25 1.7 seconds

Convert to CMYK

PBG4 5.9 seconds
Dual 1.25 4.7 seconds

Save CMYK file

PBG4 3.0 seconds
Dual 1.25 2.8 seconds

Not too shabby for a Powerbook!!!
It really brings desktop computing power to a Starbucks!!

More to come, the other 512 stick should be here any time.

Happy pooting!!

WOW...I gotta get me one of dem 7200rpm beasties for my 17". What's battery life like on a full charge with it compared to the stock 4200rpm?

How much of these stunning results to you attribute to the 7200rpm? I would love to see those tests run with a PB 17 with 5400rpm disk. I have that BTO version coming Friday. But, the real message I hear loud and clear - powerbooks do compete with desktops. However, the dualy should have done a lot better than that. I would rather have 2 computers than one of those!

For the price of the rev B 17", I really think you should be comparing it to the dual G5. You pay a premium for portablity, and the speed gap just got wider with the dual G5. Take a look at these tests from barefeats.com (the 17" isn't really in the same league, speedwise. Of course, the dual G5 is even in the same ballpark with the 17" when you're talking about computing at Starbucks...)

Also at barefeats.com you'll see the comparisons for the various drives, including the 7k60, both inside the 15" AlBook and in FW400 and FW800 external cases. It's very informative! Frankly, with the AppleCare questions about voided warranty, and given the excellent external firewire drive results, that's the way I'd go. But I would get the 5400 internal HD, for sure.
