I wonder if that's the difference of the new UJ-816 vs. the older UJ-815.

Ha! Looks like the author also had a tough time with his PB delivery.

I thought that plus and minus disks are generally readable in all drives.

No. - has been around longer, and thus more drives will read them. (Or at least that's the way it used to be. Nowadays compatibility is in the same ballpark.) Furthermore, the PB SuperDrives have all been Panasonics, so they haven't been overly speedy in ensuring + readability. (Panasonic doesn't make any + products.)

Thanks for the information. I'm days away from receiving my first Powerbook and I knew the Superdrive in it (Panasonic) would only write - disks. But I thought it would read both. Now I know better.

FWIW, I tried a DVD+R that was recorded by one of my company's departments, and it wasn't recognized at all by the PowerBook (new 15").

I just inserted a Fuji-FILM DVD+R and the Powerbook 15" AL (SuperDrive) did not recognize it and asked me to eject the disc. So much to say it reads DVD+R ?

Depends on the brand really. Some DVD+R's don't read in my home DVD player, whereas others do.
