Well, I went to the Apple Store and went straight to the Genius Bar. The Mac Genius I talked to was very sympathetic and did a document search after I told him that there was no public document addressing the Battery Issue and 10.2.8 on Apple's website.

He found an Internal Document which stated that Apple is aware of the battery problem and is indeed working to resolve it. He said that the fix will be posted to Software Update and he said it should be soon, maybe days.

I'm glad to see that Apple is working on this and I thought I'd relay the information for anyone experiencing similar problems.

My battery seems to last longer with 10.2.8. Otherwise, I've seen no change. It could be due to better power management. My hard drive does spin down a lot more, but with Mozilla running (I think I've turned off disk caching) it spins up again as soon as I load a page or scroll (but that could be due to virtual memory usage caused by Mozilla's massive RAM requirements).

No fix yet from Apple. My battery now lasts about 10 seconds before the iBook shuts down. Since I've replaced the Update with 10.2.6 I think I'm safe so I've bought a new battery and will condition it tonight. The Apple Store staff told me that since 10.2.8 they have been selling loads of batteries to iBook and Powerbook users, so this may be a more common problem that some have thought.
Count yourself lucky if you're not having this problem, but so far for me it has cost me $137 including tax and many hours trying to troubleshoot and fix this issue. I hope the new battery will give me my up to 4.5 hours of battery life that my iBook got when new, and will remain undamaged. At least the new battery is under warranty.
I still want a replacement for my original battery that was getting 2 hours before the Update, and I'll be calling Apple Support regarding this tomorow. Good luck if your're in the same boat on this.
Cheers everyone!
