A little shipping fiasco aside, my new PowerBook is about as wonderful as can be. I didn't order the 17" for want of money, but I can see another reason now - this is big enough already. I was used to the Pismo's 14" screen, and thought 12" wouldn't be useful. This computer has a lot of screen area.
The appearance of the computer is very neat and tidy, except for the bottom with its interrupted lines. I like the ports on both sides - a USB possibility for both northpaws and southpaws, as 'twere.
The Snappiness is excellent, the fastest machine I've dealt with aside from the dual 800 G4s in a school music lab. I've ordered and extra 512 MB stick for the user-accesible slot, and I might go to an Apple repair place to get the inner one upgraded as well. Heck, since I'm in debt and I remember the performance gains given to my Pismo by a gigabyte of RAM, I'll just get the inner 256 swapped for one of those 1GB sticks. Yay, next June's pay is already gone!
I've only got one stuck pixel in the second quadrant. lucky - it's light blue so it doesn't appear during normal use. Probably not good for DVDs, though. Ill have to try one.,
I guess I lucked out with my battery. I let the battery drain completely, as suggested, to let it start calibrating, but it seems to report pessimistically. It reported an hour and a half when I unplugged it, and I've been using it off the power cord for two and a half hours now, with F@H running. The meter reads a little under an hour now. I guess I'll let it run down again.
My only complaints are : The speakers are underpowered, and the ports seem woefully exposed on the sides.
